Flight Cancellation - Air Egypt

Hi everyone,
This is my first time posting, so please excuse any lapse of forum ettiqute on my part.
So...Myself and my then fiance flew to Ghana via Cairo on Air Egypt in December 2012 (to go and get married). But when we got to the airport (Heathrow) we were told this flight did not exist, and had been cancelled months prior to this. We had booked through an agent, and were told that if they didn't tell us, it was all on them (the agent). After arguing at the airport for HOURS, they agreed to put us on a flight the following evening. They flat out refused any responsibility, would not put us up at a hotel or help us get home. We had to get a cab home (£100!) and another cab back (£100) the following day. On top of that we obviously had to buy food to sustain us for that day, after having thrown everything out at home  (we were going away for a month).
At the airport the following day, we had to argue our way onto the plane, as the previous day they refused to give us boarding passes or guarantee us seats. We literally had to get to the check-in desk and hope. Eventually we were able to fly to Ghana via Cairo arriving a full day later than we had planned, which could have led to us incurring further costs (but didn't)once we got there.
I felt at the time and still feel we were shoddily treated. Does this scenario qualify for some sort of flight cancellation/delay compensation? I've read the article by Martin, but I'm not sure if:
a - I would be claiming against the agent or Air Egypt
b - Does the fact that we eventually got a flight mean that we do not qualify for compensation?
c - Would it be a flight cancellation and/or delay claim?
Thanks for any help!

Who did you pay the money to? The travel agent? I believe you made a contract with the agent, not the airline. What paperwork did you have? Did you have any instructions to check in online or call to confirm the flight 24 hours beforehand?
If I were you, I'd take it up with the agent and would have done so the moment I got home, not left it till a year later.
Actually, I'd have been on the phone to them whilst still at Heathrow once I was told the flight didn't exist.
Good luck!0
