You are getting some very good advice, but I just wanted to chip in about moving your boys to a new school and the uniform cost.
I moved to a new area in the May holiday, meaning the kids had to change schools. Like you, the eldest was due to start senior school in September and the new primary were very accommodating in allowing them both to wear their old school uniforms until the end of the summer term.
I was fortunate that the colours were a similar blue polo shirt and navy jumper but it is a question to ask the school you are considering moving them to.
Good luck on your MSE journey.0 -

My understanding is that if the property is mortgaged you have to have building insurance and will get into a lot of trouble with your mortgage company if you don't. Maybe you have already paid it but can I encourage you to check this bit out sooner rather than later? Good luck with all your plans - I am sure you can find a way through.
Hi
Thanks for you advice. Yes I know we should have building insurance, and would get into trouble with mortgage. It is something I will have to sort in the next few weeks. It is always there on my mind.....like life insurance too, as you never know what is around the corner.
Thanks for advice0 -

Hi
Oh I know I am getting good advice, and apreciate every last one
That is handy to know what you have said. I am still up in the air about moving the boys school earlier than Sept. I think to myself eldest has few months before senior, so why rock the boat, and would it be unfair to move him. He is going into such a vulnerable age ........and dont want it to effect him. We find out his senior school on monday too
Their school colours are so different, they are navy blue now, and the new school would be red, so couldnt really mingle in...ha ha
Thanks something to consider though. I have found out the new school jumpers are £17.00 each
I am use to paying £5 in Asda. Plus they have to wear a tie (dont know how much that is )0 -
Hi. I notice that once you have caught up with your priority debts then you should be able to balance the books (and in fact make good progress on the other less important debts). At the moment though by trying to play catch up one the priority debts you SOA is showing that you are sinking.
I suggest that you start from the point of view of paying what you are supposed to pay. This would then leave x amount to play catch up on the priority bills. Now which arrears are you going to tackle first? Some may be set already - council tax wage arrestment or ccj repayment but you still have some leeway on the others. First off the most important is your mortgage - try and negotiate to pay the arrears off over a longer period of time. If you can't then that is the most important priority repayment and may leave less for tv licence/council tax and others but frankly there catch up plans are actually making things worse for you at the moment.
FireWyrm - posted your priorities a few posts ago. It might be embarassing not paying for the school trip right now but frankly you have more important things to pay and the mortgage has to come above everything else.
You can do this. Take back control.

On the point of moving schools, will your eldest be going to senior school with any of his friends from his current school anyway? My daughter had six weeks at the new primary school and made friends she has had for the last 3 years at seniors.
Shame about the uniform, but at least you could take the cost out of your current petrol budget. If you only get a limited set you can at least 'hand down' to the younger one for the future.0 -

Hi KY822000
The senior school we have put down for our eldest is by where we live, so none of his current friends will be going with him
Just an update, I am going to enquire on Monday at the new school if they have a current place for a year 6 and see if we can move then asap. Concerned you see as my eldest doing his stats in May, so dont want that to be effected.
We will probably get his 1st choice we put down on the school admissions form, the only thing is the feeder school for the new school they will be moving to, is the one we put as our 3rd choice
So think we may have to appeal0 -

How your son performs in his stats will make not one jot of difference to his life. It's used to measure the school, not the kid.0 -
Hi Summer33
Just read your thread and wanted to say we have been in a similar situation and turned it around. Although we ran up more debt and are now paying it off, we are doing so very successfully.
I have to say though, it is all down to budgeting and living within your means, which I don't think you have quite grasped. When our situation was like yours, we didn't even own a tent. Now my wife and I take home more than £1000 a month more than your family (with slightly higher outgoings) and we bought a tent last year for £50 second hand. The extra money is going into savings, pensions, investments. I think you can see my point.
With caravans, school dinners and Sky TV, I'm afraid you are living somebody else's life. This attitude is what has dug you into this hole.
But hey I'm not here to nag. Well done for getting a grip before resorting to Wonga. And with a young family you are at the toughest stage financially, it does get a bit better with time. For gods sake don't have any more kids! But please, try to deal with all your financial issues, not just some of them. Life will be much less stressful, even without a caravan.0 -

of course his performance in the stats will make a difference, as it determines what level he's at.......... thus what set he goes into in senior school.
My comments also meant I didnt want my decision in changing schools in such an important year effecting him with his stats......making new friends etc but I know it is easy for kids to make friends and some of them live by us.0 -

Thanks for your comments. Cannot quite understand where your coming with some of them
I have highlighted in black as the school dinners caravans sky tv did not get us into debt, it is debt we have 7-10 years ago that has accumulated over a time, when credit was easy to get......worked full time, no kids and credit limit was increased, and like everyone on this thread it eventually catches up with you. No we have never budgeted, and that is why I am in this mess and that is why I am on this site, looking for help, not to be critisized and told where I have gone wrong
Yes we did have a attitude that got us into this hole and now trying to get out. The only areas were we can reduce our outgoings is where i have mentioned on previous comments.
I didnt post on here to be told where I have gone wrong ...I know myself that, I wanted help and advice, but thanks for reading and commenting anyway0
