life is for living it's too short and opportunities need to be grasped with both hands while it's there as they are soon gone..
Life is unpredictable and I fully believe that you should take advantage of any opportunity as no-one knows what is just around the corner in life,

my children have been very lucky over the years to see/do things that other will never have the opportunity to do, like my space mad lad watching a rocket being sent into space and getting a chance to look round the VAB building that is once again closed to the public. Something he wouldn't of had the opportunity to do if I had to have waited for dictated school leave.
we have also done both of these, but during school holidays.

"Willott added that family holidays can be "incredible value" but should not be at the expense of a child's education, with school attendance throughout the year remaining "critical" to improved exam results.
The Education Secretary Michael Gove also said it is "wrong" for parents to take children out of school during term time to take advantage of cheaper holidays."

....I will admit that my children have long since flown the nest ,so my knowledge of the current curriculum is limited HOWEVER, we always used to take our kids on holiday in term time (at least until they were at secondary school), either the week before Whitsun Easter,or the start of the Summer holidays -because the amount of "education" they got in those weeks was miniscule - I clearly remember them setting off with games, toys etc or with packed lunches for an "educational" visit to a park somewhere, sports days etc etc-also the schools used to get rid of "inset" days around official holidays.
Always used to write to the school in advance and only once had a "knockback" -which we overcame by explaining that they were the only weeks my Company would let me have that year.:)

My parents used to around once a year take us out for a week before half term or the holidays to go away somewhere and it was fine. We had less time off than the kids who were allowed off school at the hint of a sniffle.

I will do the same with my kids and just pay the fine, will still save money overall.

Sorry but this is rubbish as it happens already. Holidays are different in different parts of the country. The Easter holidays here are usually different to down south and we've had some cracking deals on UK holidays down south when we're off but the southern schools aren't. We've also had cracking deals flying from Glasgow in our half term when the Scots were in school.

Likewise, late June and Early to mid July works well for Scots flying from Newcastle or Manchester. For those in the south, well, they've got more options and cheaper holidays as there are less in the way of regional supplements. They can also get over the channel without a long drive.

Just let us take our kids out of school once a year for a 2 week holiday!

Whats more important! A nation of educated kids who can never afford to go away with their parents.
    ...or...
... a nation of happy kids who are able to enjoy time with their hard working parents.

Going by your use of an exclamation mark instead of a question mark I'd have to say that a nation of educated kids. ;)

I think depression in teenagers and young adults is being caused by the pressures that parents and government are putting on them.

It may be a factor but there are many other social pressures that simply didn't exist 20 years ago that are making children's lives more difficult now. A 2 week holiday during term time isn't going to prevent or help depression as the underlying problems will still remain.

we have also done both of these, but during school holidays.

The VAB Building is now closed again to the public and for the last two years i've been unable to get leave during school holidays so it was then or not at all. workers are screwed by the whole system business can dictate leave now the government has reduced discretionary powers from schools when are family's supposed to have time together, take Asda staff unless they are on the management rota they have to work one day of the weekend every weekend.
