Dress fittings (forked from another thread)

  • Obv didnt go to the fitting with the Mrs but certainly would have gotten reports back if it had involved standing in just her knickers anywhere.

She did take a friend with her partly for a second option that isnt from the person trying to flog you something and partially because the shop gave free champagne/ prosecco so she wanted to share the positive aspect

I made my own dress. Sewing sessions were quite often done in my underwear as I seemed to be taking the dress on and off quite often at certain stages. Absolutely no-one was invited, and any casual callers would have got short shrift if indeed I had answered the door in the first place.
  • I bought my dress in a sample sale only my mum came with me. Luckily it hasn't needed any alterations with 6 weeks to go now :)

Yes - I went along to my DDs and DILs 'choosing THE dress' affairs. my sis also owned a Bridal shop and prospective Brides often brought along a large 'entourage'.
its not usual for there to be anyone apart from brides' mother or her friends/bridesmaids at the actual fittings though. But, the choosing of the dress seems to have become a 'social occasion'.

I was invited to a recent bridesmaid's dress fitting!

Would maybe have considered if it wasn't second of three and I hadn't already seen fifty million photos and both(!) sets of shoes. The final fitting involves five hours and practice hair & makeup- all on bridesmaids as young as six.

I'm trying to be interested but all I want to shout is get a life!

Don't worry too much about missing this 'event'.

It sounds like it will be included in the official video when it's released.:D

actually - I remember my sis saying that one bride did ask if the videographer could come to a fitting - she refused, as she didn't allow photos to be taken in the shop.

I hate shopping with others and know what suits me so if I ever get married I will be choosing my dress alone.

Why has everything to do with weddings become such a big deal. A lot of brides now seem to expect their friends to be involved and mega-excited about every aspect of planning the wedding. Sorry, but I have a life and also have other people in my address book who are getting married too! It's funny how other significant life events/achievements don't get so much attention. I have one friend who climbed K2 and another who is one of the youngest people to get a phd in her field. Why does that get less attention than getting married!

    I agree with this ^^^^

it seems these days that the Bride and her family cannot just plan a wedding - the whole family and the guests are treated to a step by step account of the whole process! ad nauseum.
if not in person then on effbook or Tweeter.
I mourn the old days when you got invited to the wedding, then you didn't hear a word until you turned up, had a good old knees up and then wished them well and departed.
These days you are 'consulted' on every aspect to choosing the cake, photographer, colour scheme - the whole kit and caboodle apart from the venue.

Does no-one make their own wedding dress these days?

I was astonished to read that thread too. Weddings were a lot more low key when we did it, I too made my own dress and the bridesmaids' too. I suppose the trying on sessions for the bridesmaids were quite fun but it wasn't a big deal to invite anyone to that wasn't actually involved. I remember one mum holding some pins and that's it. No hurt feelings about that I'm sure.
