Dress fittings (forked from another thread)

I never knew before that thread that watching a bride-to-be having her dress altered was a social event!
Did you have or want an audience when you were standing on a table in your knickers being pinned into a kilometre of tulle? (I can't imagine anything more embarrassing.)
Have you been one of the audience for one of these safety-pin-stravaganzas? (I can't imagine anything more tedious.) Or hysterically offended not to invited along?
Inquiring minds need to know! :rotfl:

Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.

I was invited to a recent bridesmaid's dress fitting!
Would maybe have considered if it wasn't second of three and I hadn't already seen fifty million photos and both(!) sets of shoes. The final fitting involves five hours and practice hair & makeup- all on bridesmaids as young as six.
I'm trying to be interested but all I want to shout is get a life!0 -
The only person who came to my actual fitting was my mum.
My nan & sister saw me try the dress on but no need for an audience of watching you be measured or someone pinning a few bits. Waste of time! I've never been to any of my friends either.0 -
I just took my mum to make sure it all looked ok. The only other one I've been to was my sister's. Both were maybe 30mins tops. It was mostly to check the length with shoes and make sure that you couldn't see bra straps etc. Certainly not a social event!0

As a woman on 'curvy' proportions I was terrified of the whole dress buying event. I hate anyone coming clothes shopping with me as I am stupidly self conscious about it all. I did the first rounds of dress shops by myself, and then when I had a shortlist I bought a friend with me for help and approval.
Turns out it was great fun once I got going, but I needed the time alone to have the private discussions - like 'so will you have any samples that fit a fat girl of x size?' One place only had 8's, so all I could do was look at the dresses on the hanger, which was useless. Glad I found that out alone. Another was only large sizes, and I found that equally weird.
Mum came to the final fitting. My family are all overseas, so they were only over a week before anyway.0 -
I understand that brides usually shop for the dress with their mum and/or their bridesmaids, that makes sense. It's inviting them all along to the fittings that I just don't get!
I was my sister's bridesmaid a few years back and she went to her dress alteration sessions on her own. We 3 bridesmaids had one picking and trying on our dresses session with the bride, then the dresses were ordered in our sizes, then when they arrived at the shop we had one more appointment to adjust straps, hems and bustlines. Then a final try-on about a week before the wedding.
There were only 4 of us there and screens up so we had a little privacy when we were in bras & pants being measured up and helped in and out of the dresses - I think I would have freaked and run if half the wedding were there gawping!Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.0 -
What a big load of faff!Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession

Yeah I think this is weird! I've been on one look for wedding dresses so far and took my mum and 1 bridesmaid. Going again soon with just my mum, and then again with the other bridesmaid.
When it comes to dress fittings / alterations, I'll go on my own, or possibly with my mum only.Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard0 -

Yes as a sibling and bridesmaid i,ve been to wedding~dress trying~ons, but not subsequent fittings.
i think it was my post in the other thread that mentioned this ~ did i get the wrong end of the stick there?0 -
Nope, never been to one.
My best mate (only bridesmaid) and mum were with me when I found my dress (truth be told they had to drag me there with 2 weeks to go as I didn't have anything to wear!). It was very plain and didn't need any alterations so I had it off the peg. Good job as there wasn't time for alterations.
I don't understand the obsession with wedding dresses etc.......Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
For the first fitting, my mum came with me, but only because she had to get her dress altered too!
Then for the second one my bridemaids came along - again only because her dress needed altering too.
I don't really get the whole audience thing when it comes to dress fittings. Mum was with me when I chose it, and everyone else gets to see it on the day anyway.0
