Warning: Amazon Prime Membership increasing to £79

Options
Just had the email from Amazon. From tomorrow they are adding streaming services to the Prime membership. Will be free until next renewal but then price for Prime will be £79.

I don't watch that much TV so wouldn't use the streaming service and £79 is a bit steep just for free next day delivery so I've set my membership to not auto renew.

Hopefully they will reconsider in future at which point I'll sign back up for the free next day delivery.

  • I'll pay the £79 doesn't bother me.

I hope they remove the free trials too. See too much abuse of it.

Should do what me and 4 other mates do, add them to the membership and split the cost, £10 per year at the minute, easily worth it

Have you double checked your Prime renewal details on Amazon?

Mine is showing that on the next renewal I will still get charged the usual fee of £49 and it is only on the following renewal that it will increase to £79.
On 09 Mar 2014, you will be charged £49 for another year of Prime. Starting 09 Mar 2015, you will be charged £79 per year.Learn More
  • Yep, I got the email saying my rate will go up next year in 2015

So, i've got a year to decide if this video thing is any good. I already pay for netflix, and if it's better/as good, then I might as well save a load of money and cancel it (probably amazons idea)

My renewal is in June and I've turned off auto renewal now. A £30 price rise ostensibly for a streaming package I have tried and have no interest in does not appeal to me at all. Personally, I have little time for movies and the TV selection disappoints. I have tried these streaming services (LoveFilm and Netflix) before and I hardly watch anything. LoveFilm's TV selection is decidedly weak compared to what Americans get on their Prime Instant Video

If Amazon had just raised the price for the regular Prime subscription (which is the ulterior goal - Amazon's margins here and in the U.S. are being hurt by Prime shipping costs) then I may have stayed. £60 or £65 a year would have been fine, but I'm not paying £79 to have a streaming service I don't want included.
This is everybody's fault but mine.

Yep - mine already said £79 at renewal (due in November).
  • Maybe it's because mine is so close to the renewal date that they are keeping it at the £49 figure until next year.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up and I have turned off my auto-renewal just in case I forget about it in 2015 and get charged the £79.

Have just changed my membership to "do not renew", it's simply not worth an extra £30 for something I'll hardly if ever use.

Since joining Prime I've always made Amazon my first port of call knowing I'll get free next day delivery so ironically once my membership expires I'll be using Google more to search for products - certainly in my case they've shot themselves in the foot with this price increase.

  • One customer.. Jeff @ Amazon will be loosing sleep. Lots more like me who are happy to pay it.

Ive certainly got more than £79 back in deliveries this year alone so its profit for me.
