e-petition on extra charges for school holidays: debated by MPs today at 4.30pm

My son's school found the solution to this. As a CoE primary school they apparently had a bit more flexibility so as so many parents took their kids off the week after the Whitsun half term to get a reasonably priced two week "summer holiday" they made it official. We had a two week break end of May/into June and broke up a week later than the rest of the schools for the summer. Almost everyone was happy and it worked well for several years until a minority complained that because they also had children at other schools and weren't happy they didn't "match up" so the school had to revert to the standard term dates as apparently the LEA only permitted it so long as no-one complained.
As for the debate ............. What a complete waste of time. If they want a solution switch to year round school -and do away with the long summer break in favour of shorter but more frequent breaks and wait for the NUT to throw their teddy out of their pram.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

But less we regret, that when I used to play the orange side, baddie, in the 1980's, Oddessa and Sevestapol were the ignotors of the third conflict. The embers may be burning in Kiev, yet the smoke may drift south!0 -

Ahh the good old days. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.0 -
I guess there is one solution: a state run holiday camp for the whingers somewhere on the coast, same price all year, facilities dependent on whatever the government of the day can afford to subsidise, while the rest of us who can think for ourselves can carry on as normal travelling the world at a reasonable price.
Job done, everyone is happy.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Or... prices during half-term are the 'normal' prices, and the term-time ones are heavily discounted to try and entice people into them. Again, supply and demand.
Funny when people look at it like that they have less of an argument.
I wonder if the people who complain about peak holiday prices are happy to take advantage of off-peak family rail tickets at weekends?
People also tend to forget that hotels abroad don't just cater for the British holidaymaker. They are also in the market for German, Dutch and Swedish people. There is absolutely nothing the British government can do to control how much a holiday in Spain, Turkey or Egypt is.0 -
Good to see that "no MP backed price regulation. . . . and the Government also rejected the idea".
