My O2 SIM is now "Invalid" - has PAYG topup expired?

I have a basic mobile for the glovebox with £10 credit, put on in Sept. The phone has received texts since them, but I haven't sent anything, and now the phone says "Invalid SIM". Has the credit expired and have I lost my number as well?

I've had a mental block. I've had a contract phone for such a long time, I've forgotten how PAYG works.

I just want to add £10 and forget about it, except for whatever I have to do to keep the SIM active, and don't want to have to change the SIM or my number.

Sorry for the numpty questions.

Sometimes if there is not an outgoing chargeable call in X amount of time then the network, stops the sim, if you ring the provider up they may re-activate it for you and return your credit.

It's 6 months without a chargeable action and they will deactivate the sim.

Are you sure it was September? That is only 5 months ago.
Our Rights to Bar or Disconnect Your Mobile Phone
7.1 If you do not make or receive a chargeable call at least once in any 6 month period your Mobile Phone will be disconnected and you will lose any remaining credits balance on your Account. If you wish to be re-connected after this time you will be given a new Mobile Phone number.

Sometimes there can be an intermittent connection. Take the SIM out of the phone and then replace it.

If it still doesn't work contact O2. Either the SIM has failed or they've turned it off. Even if it's the latter some networks are willing to reactivate SIMs if they haven't been off for long.

Orange recently expired a couple of spare "burner" SIMs I had; it was definitely less than 6 months since I'd last used them, because I had made a note of it.

However, it wasn't enough of an issue for me to complain.

(I really had them as spares for my kids to use, but they're now a bit older and have their own contract phones.)
  • Could be the sim gone faulty as mentioned above but it could also be a faulty phone. I had a Nokia 3110 which occasionally said "sim card registration failed" which might not be quite the same as you have experienced but it turned out to be a phone fault.
