I know :p you helped me to speed up my current..."less old" ie 2005 desktop for which I am extremely grateful! :D

Don't know.....from memory it a HP Pavilion something but only has 128 or 256 ram and runs XP was never particularly good. Will have a look....

Closed can I also please ask what your opinion would be on running a windows XP machine when the support runs out in April?

I do want a new desktop or all in one but for various reasons I probably won't be getting one before then or for at least a few months after. Although this PC is running OK I don't see the point of buying Windows 7 to put on it in the meantime really......

I also use my phone and tablet for other stuff so it's not used as much as it was.

Windows includes a remote desktop capability, but the machine you are trying to connect to needs to be set up to accept it.

If you want to get at files and are networked (actually the above option needs network too), you could try mounting the C$ drive of the old PC onto the netbook.

XP will operate fine after the end of support.

my opinion is if you have a disk image backup and an antivirus, then don't worry about it, it will still work, just slightly more risk of infection (which AV will still detect), discussed here

    Thanks again Closed!

That is really helpful and good to see different people's opinions and various stats too.

Sounds like using Chrome after then will be safer than Firefox too. I will probably stick to using my tablet / phone for online shopping / banking after then although I don't really understand about security / Viruses / Malware etc. on Android whether it's an issue or not?

I did post a separate thread asking about it.... but am still none the wiser....lol!

I'm currently using Avast and running checks with Malwarebytes is that enough or should I be adding any other Security things too? I do back up but will do them more regularly too.

    Hello all!

    Me....back....again....

So back to sorting out my old PC forgetting the netbook, am I on the right tracks if I buy one of these:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Aten-CS22U-2-Port-Cable-Switch/dp/B002NTIZCG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1393534835&sr=8-1&keywords=kvm+switch

Will that allow me to use the cables into the back of both the towers my old PC & current desktop to connect them both to one screen but be able to switch between them using the KVM switch thingy?

And if so is there any way that it makes one wireless keyboard with touchpad work between them both in the same way or is that a bit optimistic? :rotfl:

the requirement is wandering a little, what are you trying to achieve? - if you are throwing the pc away, a kvm switch is of limited use.

If you've got 2 pc's just take the disk out of the older one, and put it in the newer one, or use a usb caddy, or one of the other options mentioned previously.

  • As a one off operation I would use explorer to find "My Documents" and right click and "share" the folder.

Assuming both computers share a broadband connection (either wired or WiFi) you then should be able to see the files on the desktop on the netbook. Copy the whole of the "My documents" on the desktop to a suitable location on the netbook and you are done.

I have several PCs connected to an 8-way KVM switch; it works perfectly.
