Installing an existing windows 7 32 bit image on an SSD.

Options
Hi folks,

In the near future I intend to get an SSD to put my existing OS on.

I would like just to put my existing acronis image of windows 7 32 bit on the SSD, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that its not a good idea for some technical reason and to do a clean install instead. To be honest it would take me far too long just to install everything from scratch, would take me weeks and weeks to do it.

Is this correct about putting an image on an SSD or just an old wives tale?

Thanks

You can do it on the condition that you MUST re-configure windows yourself to disable HDD optimisations and enable SSD optimisations, otherwise you will cause undue ware on the SSD.

When you install windows it detects the type of drive you have and will setup your system accordingly, which is why the clean install is the usual suggestion.

Its also a good time for a clean out of the stuff you never use anyway.

Thanks a lot for that reply. Do I just reconfigure Windows for SSD optimisation in the SSD in device manager?

    Thanks again

No unfortunately its not as simple as that, which is why the clean install is the recommended approach.

Its not a single switch, there are several things you need to-do and some like enabling trim can only be done though the command prompt. Its not something you should do unless you know what you're doing.

The SSDs I bought (Samsung 840 pro) did actually come with software that would take care of most the settings for you, however I did a clean install so I didn't really take a good look into it, also if you intend to run the SSDs under raid, generally this type of software cant detect your drives.
