Don't think you've seen a Polo SDI Estate have you? They're big units lol. Probably not far off a Passat or a Bora, actually. I can remember a guy near where I lived using one as a taxi for years. The engines are practically indestructible.Slightly larger, but VW Golf TDI.
You can pick up a decent one for around £2k and will do 50+ MPG. Probably one of the cheapest high MPG cars you can get that is also pretty reliable for the age.
You can also get a Golf SDI Estate as well.
If MPG savings is the single aim, then I always recommend the SDI over the TDI. You'll get better MPG most of the time, they're easier and cheaper to service and you'll never have to worry about a dead turbo
