Supermarket Tactics

  • I don't think they think we are dumb ,we just don't shop savvy so quick to pick up our normal shopping and go in with blinkers because if we always buy that perticular size we continue, instead of just looking at what we buy. All shops put price per item on the price labels I look at these when buying . Recently a shop was doing a family size pack of Heinz beans (6) for £3 but you could buy a 4 pack with 2 free for £2 you just need to play them at their own game it's on the shelf and priced and you just need to look. They are not going to make it easy.

I gave up being surprised at what they will try to sell when I saw the fresh mashed potato on sale. Funnily enough I rarely see it yellow stickered, either!

I am led to believe (from stuff I have seen posted on MSE in the past, mainly) that manufacturers run promotions where they will try to shift certain stock and the supermarkets get a better deal on it. Maybe the jacket spud thing is one of those promotions?

Having said that, while I do buy some prepared potato items I won't be buying frozen jacket spuds. I 'believe' the advantage is that they will cook quicker than from fresh, being part cooked, but I could be wrong on this.
They cook in 5 minutes straight from the freezer.
  • What annoys me about these bags of spuds nowadays is there are never any big spuds for jacket potatoes! You have to buy them separately. Another way the supermarkets are ripping us off!!

Bake an oven full of potatoes and freeze them yourself

I do this for myself and the husband - frozen 'waste of money' ones are just for the toddler. The price of frozen jackets is nothing to her fruit bill each week! Peaches - £3.99 for 4, grapes several pounds a bunch, pears £3 for 4 (cheap ones never ripen at this time of year). The majority of her fruit and veg comes from M&S because it actually lasts in the fridge. Husband 'economised' a couple of times and picked up cheaper stuff from Asda - only to throw more than half of it in the bin as it doesn't keep.

You do know that we don't need to eat a lot of fruit, at the end of the day fructose is just sugar only with a fancier name

Fruit also contains vitamins and minerals.

Are you suggesting I give my toddler a spoonful of sugar as her mid-morning snack?

But Calpol is already strawberry flavoured! :D

And before anyone has a go about buying a branded infant pain-reliever at a higher price than a generic version - it comes witha special syringe thing that fits into the stopper. The stuff is as sticky as hell if you spill it off a spoon! When the bottle is finished I will see if I can remove the special stopper to refill it with a 'cheapie' equivalent. :j

Have you walked in the street recently? Alot of people still drag their knuckles along the floor, how do you expect them to work out pricing.
Plus of course, others simply dont care, its free money to some......
