Ryan Air dumping my poor old mum in Stansted at 2am :(

My 85 year old mum flew Cork to Stansted last weekend. The flight was meant to arrive at 10pm, but was delayed (they say by poor weather in Stansted, but everything else was landing ok??). It arrived 3 hours 50 minutes late. My understanding is that this means she isn't entitled to EU compensation, but I'm wondering if they are responsible for her onward travel costs.

She was meant to be met by another relative, but arriving at 2am she decided she would have to use a taxi. It cost her £88 to get home.

Is she able to claim anything back from Ryan Air? They did give her a 4 euro cafe voucher in Cork, but that's all.

Ryanair got her to her booked destination and provided care during the delay, that is where their duty ends. There were problems at Stansted last week caused by the high winds. Had it been my 85 year old relative I would have met her at the airport, whatever the time of day.

Different aircraft, even of the same basic type, have different restrictions for operating in severe winds.
It can sometimes even vary based on the actual weight of the aircraftt
Just because one has landed does not mean they all can!

according to flightstats it arrived 3 hours and 22 mins late and whilst it was the longest delay that evening it was not the only delay
    Ryanair from Strasbourg Cancelled
Easyjet from Grenoble delayed 118 mins the earlier flight was delayed 78 mins
Ryanair from Zaragoza delayed 58 mins
Ryanair from Las Palmas delayed 49 mins
Easyjet from Geneva delayed 47 mins
    and various other delays

Thanks TomTom for clarifying the position. It seems unreasonable to me that the duty ends when you're delivered to your destination, regardless of how impossible it is to complete your journey :( However, if that's the position, c'est la vie.

Incidentally, the clue is in the name... I am Edinburgh Susan... as in I live in Edinburgh, Scotland. If my mum had been waiting for me to arrive, I wouldn't have got there until well after breakfast the following day :(

I suppose what it does do is highlight the importance of travel insurance - though in all honesty, by the time she'd paid for the policy and paid the excess I doubt she would be much better off.

    Thanks for your time.

I doubt travel insurance would have covered this.

Why is it unreasonable? They're an airline connecting you to other airports, not your home address. If the weather means you're delayed, that's just bad luck.

We can't hold every company responsible for anything that happens outside of their control, and to suggest we can is ludicrous.

If my 83 Mum was flying somewhere on an evening flight as soon as I knew it was delayed I'd be on to that relative to make sure she was looked after and not left stranded, In this day and age of technology to leave your own mother(or any other relative-I know you weren't the one supposed to be picking her up) in her eighties to get and pay for an £88 taxi fair is disgusting. Presumably the other relative is in some way unreliable and also doesn't have a phone so once you realized the issue couldn't have liased with them. In this day and age vulnerable people of all ages should have phones on them . The whole thing sounds really odd-as surely whoever was collecting your Mum knew the flight was delayed so should have made sure she was looked after and could get home.

Perhaps the lesson to be learned is to not take evening flights if there isn't a reliable plan in place in the case of delays. Considering how bad the weather was I am astounded no-one in the family suggested she delayed her travel or was there to meet her. I suggest your anger should be directed at them for letting her down.

As for duty of care stopping at the point of arrival ..........If your bus was late would you expect the bus company to get you a taxi home from the bus stop ? Your Mum had choices, get a lift (it isn't clear if a lift had been arranged why it didn't happen -most people check flight times before meeting someone at an airport-and would simply leave later), wait in a nice warm airport terminal cafe til public transport started in a couple of hours, get a very expensive cab.

It sounds like her lift couldn't be bothered waiting/going out late -if they were my relatives (even if Mum had told them "don't worry I'll get a cab" ) I'd be livid with them.
