What are the legalities of this?

Hello.
There's a shop in leeds city centre called Xplicit Italia.
The last few months it's been pushing a massive "we are closing down - everything must go.".
They were reducing things week on week until they finally closed down.
Less than 3 weeks later they are back. Same shop. Same location. Same offers. Even the clothes are all in the same place.
Is this legal? How on earth can they get away with this dodgy marketing tactic to make it look like people were saving money in their closing down sale??
Just wondered...

It's possible that it closed down and has since reopened under new ownership or new management.0

There are actually laws around this.
It used to be really daft, when growing up in Sheffield there was famously a tailors shop in the centre that was 'Closing Down' for 14 years! Haha.
I'm sure there is now a time limit on closing down sales, and a host of other regulations.A computer once beat me at chess.
It was no match for me at kickboxing!0 -

But it did close down for 3 weeks you even say so above. Shutting a shop for 3 weeks is hardly going to be part of some dodgy marketing tactic!0 -
Has this happened once, or has it happened quite regularly?0

So weren't they saving money? Surely that would be easy to spot?0

My local sports direct did that. They just moved stuff around in the shop while they were closed for all of a dayI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Health & Beauty, Greenfingered Moneysaving and How Much Have You Saved boards. Having spoken to a friend they closed for a maximum of a week.
The shop didn't close down as advertised. If it did it wouldn't be back within 7 days.0 -
I really cannot see how this could be deliberate. The margins is the stock was heavily discounted before would have been poor (in other words not much made per item) & then having zero sales for 7 days whilst all other bills would have need to have been paid eg rent. There is no way that would have made more profit than not having a heavy discount and staying open all the time.
Just sounds like they had problems but somehow managed to get bailed out.0 -
The staff were telling people that they were re opening after their closing down sale months before.
There is no way this can be legal?0 -
Does it really matter? The items get knocked down in price so the buyer gets a bargain.
If your really that concerned, contact Trading Standards. Personally I think theres better things to be doing then worrying about this.0
