  • Mine was only £75 we are talking 600-800 for all 4 of us. Its a matter of principle really rather than the money. This is the reason I think the police won't do anything

You still have legal options open to you - if you can get full details of the recipient.

But often people in this sort of situation who don't know exactly who they are dealing with loose their money.

I think the significant bit of that Wiki article is:
The House of Lords held that where an innocent third party had information relating to unlawful conduct, a court could compel them to assist the person suffering damage by giving them that information. The case established the Norwich Pharmacal jurisdiction and disclosure orders against innocent third parties are now known as Norwich Pharmacal orders in the UK.
In other words, if your bank or the seller's bank knows who your seller is, and if the seller is seen to have acted unlawfully, then the banks could be forced by the courts to reveal the name and address of your seller.

I'll leave it for someone else to explain just how you might go about doing that, but it sounds expensive to me.
  • That makes sense and what I thought. This is the reason I need the action fraud team to take it seriously. Because at the minute he is being protected by the bank under the data protection act. This is the problem I have getting the online fraud team to get involved.

If it's only about the principle of it, then I would just forget about it, on principle that you very stupidly sent a stranger money directly from your bank account without doing any research first.
