Stolen Wheelie Bin!

  • I had some drug addicts living next door to me with their kids and because their bins wouldn't be taken because they had put the wrong items in, they took my recycling bin and filled it with nappies and so mine wouldn't get taken either! They ended up with both my bins and I had none for 5 weeks, the council gave me one but I had to ring and speak to people every day to get someone to take action!

  • Is their house the same number as yours? Could you fit your street name on as well, even if abbreviated? I'd also be tempted to knock on the door and tell them why I was taking the bin next time (I'd have to be feeling brave for this though)

Buy a cheap bike lock and chain it up.

Last winter my wheelie bin was taken for a 'joy-ride' one night when it was snowing heavily. I only found out when I took my dog outside for the last time at night. When I saw it was missing I followed the tracks in the snow to a few houses down along the communal gardens and it had just been dumped under some trees :(

I was glad to get it back as I'd had to pay £20 for it when I moved in as there wasn't an existing bin. Problem is, the lid was torn off when it was stolen and I have not been able to keep any cover on successfully. The best was a £1 tarpaulin from Tesco but one day when I hadn't put the bin out to be emptied, the bin men came and took it anyway and the tarp completely disappeared!

So after all this heavy rain my bin is currently half full of water, lol. And it stinks in summer as there is no lid to cover the smells (and I put my dog waste, bagged, into it). I am sure the council would never give me a replacement for free and I certainly don't want to pay for one! :(

£20 is a great price for a bin. I was £45 when mine went missing, and our bin men won't empty a bin with no lid (something about how the stuff will spill out when the truck starts to lift it).

The council don't give our free bins (the only exception for our council is for the rare occasion where the bin slips off the guides and ends up in the back of the bin lorry). The Housing Association replace them for their tenants if they are stolen; it's a landlord's responsibility to ensure there is a bin for non-recyclable waste so I assume it's because of that.

Drill a hole in the bottom to let the water drain out?

Firstly drill some holes in the bottom of the bin to drain the water out. If your bin stinks as you say then go to the shops and buy some Bin Buddy (supermarkets sell it as do hardware shops) and sprinkle this in the bin. Why not ask the council if they can provide a replacement lid as the lid on your bin has been broken? They may provide one free of charge but if you don't ask then you won't know.
