A question for mattress/bed experts

I've found a hand tufted, two sided mattress online which boasts 1800 pocket springs, lambswool, silk and cotton fillings for just £360. Is this the bargain it seems to be? The make and model is Highgrove Affinity:

I'm no expert, but the spec seem to be quite good and the mattress looks like it is decent quality.
Here is the website for the actual manufacturers, who may even supply at an even cheap price than the store as it would cut out the middleman, but then again it might be dearer because the store may order in bulk , but worth a try.

In what terms do you mean bargain? The natural fillings, spring count or the fact that it's a pocket mattress?

It''ll be no Hypnos mattress that's for sure.

The fillings may be natural but they will be very lightweight/thin.

    Spring count is pretty good.

But I would say that there are loads of mattresses similar around that price bracket.

    For example.

Ok this doesn't have the Silk and only 1500 springs (5ft) but it's only £265! http://www.bedworlddirect.co.uk/restus-saturn-1500-pocket-mattress.html

A bit unfair to compare almost any mattress to a Hypnos mattress, considering that Hypnos are high end hand made bespoke makers, the only other manufacturers that you could consider comparing with Hypnos would be The Hand Made Bed Company and possibly Millbrook.

The mattress in question offers three qualities you often recommend for a low price. It seems like a bargain, my question was "is this too good to be true?".
But I would say that there are loads of mattresses similar around that price bracket.
Apart from the Restus, can you suggest some others I could try?

The price of Restus mattresses also seem "too good to be true". Are they good quality?

    2 things to consider here.

Firstly internet prices are very low compared to shops for mattresses, as shops need lots of space and therefore overheads to display the products. Some of the internet guys work on such low margin I really don't know why they bother.

Secondly, although the description will say natural fillings, trying to find out how much fillings are in a product is almost impossible. Bit like asking Coca Cola for their full recipe.

These mattresses will be thrown together very quickly in the factory, i.e not built with the same loving care that you'd get if you paid more. No centre tied springs, no hand side stitching, tape edging that may be a bit wonky etc....

But in terms of value for money, they are pretty good.

There are over 100 different makes of mattress in the UK I can only comment of those suppliers that I deal with. Products that I've lifted, tired, delivered, bounced on, slept on in store, inspected for faults (customer complaints) etc......

Restus and a company Deep Sleep offer really good value for money IMO.

Just don't expect Rolls Royce quality if your budget is only for a Fiesta.

Have you tired in store? or hoping to do all of this online?

What I'd like to do is get the very best mattress I can for my budget.

I'm doing whatever research I can online, where everything is written down for me, but I've visited some retailers, independents and multiples, when able. I am currently very busy.

Today I went to Feather and Black and found this, which I preferred to their 1200 spring model (both made by Harrison Spinks, I believe):

If you have the time, would you tell me what you think of the above and these alternatives?

  • We bought a very good quality mattress from an eBay seller. New mattresses - some are slightly marked but all in original wrapping. Ours is 2200 pocket sprung with memory foam topper (Sleepeezee) and rrp was over £600 and we paid £155.

Hand side stitching is very worth while as it allows the sleeper to sleep nearer the edge of the bed. It's design to make the edge of the mattress firmer the normal.

SO that rules out the bedknobsbed model.

Are you the type of person who turns a mattresses religiously? Meant to be done once a month.

If you are then a double sided mattress turned properly WILL out live a non turn design.

I sell the crystal so know it well.

As for the other 3 I do not know them so can only go on the spec given and pictures.

Marks and Spencer I suspect have a massive mark up on their mattress as they get them designed with their own label therefore
no price comparison. So I don't suspect great value for money.

You haven't said what tension you prefer, I reckon the Relyon mattress may be quite gentle with all that upholstery on top. Not that it's a bad thing sinking into a mattress that offers proper support is better then rock solid. Relyon make a good product and would recommend as a supplier.

Restus as I've said in previous post make mattresses for John Lewis and Next, so quality from them is not an issue. They do offer very good value for money.

So it's down to firmness and IF you want/do turn you mattress over.

Advising online is never as easy as doing it with the product in front of you.

Thank you, rds. Their Origins 1500 model looks like a candidate.
So it's down to firmness and IF you want/do turn you mattress over.

Pinkypants, I preferred Feather and Black's 1500 spring Beckett model to their 1200 spring Shelley Deluxe because it felt firmer. Both are rated 8/8 for tension, however.

I do tend to flip my mattress when changing sheets.

I can't seem to find a Restus retailer in South Herts, is the Crystal sold in Next or JL under their own name?
