Can you retake the pic - lift the item away from the background (any block smaller than the stone - a dice?) to give you distance from the background will help remove the shadows - then the Photoshopping will be a lot easier.

Once again thank you to everyone who's taken the time to respond.

Here's an example of a photo as taken

What I want to do is to keep the outline and have the whole shape black.
In that case, Photoshop is the best tool.

Probably the easiest way would be to add a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer, and ramp the contrast to the maximum setting. That should get rid of most of the reflections.

To get rid of the rest, add a Levels adjustment layer above it, and drag the black point to the right past the noise.

If there are any white pixels left - and assuming it matters - they should be well within the body of the shape so easy to paint over without going anywhere near the edge.

For example, this took me about 20 seconds to do in Photoshop.

Or if you want a flatter image, this was with just the Levels adjustment, with the black point dragged rightwards past the low end noise, and the white point dragged leftwards past the high end noise.

Yes thank you. I must admit I put it off until this morning. When people say how easy things are I often find it very difficult! However you are right it is very simple when you know what to do.

    Thanks again to everyone.
