Drawing Rounded Shapes with Photoshop

Options
I want to draw some rounded shapes to fill with colour.

I thought of drawing them with the mouse and then somehow getting Photoshop to smooth out wobbles. I want the shapes to remain random and not over corrected to be circles or ovals for instance. Can this be done or is there a better way?

I have Photoshop CS5 and also other Adobe products if something else would be better.

  • I'm not familiar with Photoshop, but it must have Paths tool to draw rounded shapes.

What is a 'rounded shape' that isn't a circle or an oval? Can you be a bit clearer about what you actually want to achieve?

And what the end product is going to be and how you're going to use it?

Photoshop isn't a drawing package, though it does have drawing tools, and is almost certainly not the best option for this.

Do you have Adobe Illustrator? That would be my preference. Or even the freeform shape tool in Powerpoint - it has an option to smooth points to make them more rounded.

Thanks all. I'm sorry I didn't explain very well want I need to do.

I have some photos of black stone slices which are random shapes but with the edges smoothed and rounded. They are a variety of more or less circular or oval shapes but each is different and none are true geometrical shapes. They are more like potatoes.

The problem is that when photographed they show reflections which I try to remedy in Photoshop by painting in colour, but the edges always look wobbly after I have done this. I was hoping that I could draw round the outside of each shape and then somehow smooth it out so it doesn't look hand drawn.

Here's a photo. Photobucket have chopped off the ends of the photo but it gives an idea of the shape.

It is not a problem that the shape will be a solid colour but it is important for customers to be able to see the exact shape. But I don't want the pictures to look as if they have been manipulated (even though they have been).

Can't you select shape with the magic wand or magnetic lasso tool.

Can you upload one of the images before your paint job so we can see what problem you're trying to solve?

Perhaps you're talking about bezier curves - you can make rounded yet irregular shapes.

    https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=photoshop+bezier will get you started.

Once again thank you to everyone who's taken the time to respond.

Here's an example of a photo as taken

What I want to do is to keep the outline and have the whole shape black.

Should be able to select that quite easily with magnetic lasso if not quite right finish off with freehand lasso. Look on youtube for photoshop magnetic lasso.
