Relocation packages advice

Hi all,

I was offered a job around 5 months ago and because of the CRB process it has taken this long to finally accept and prepare to start working. However, I live in the north east and the position is in London.

I was wondering whether relocation contributions are normal in your place of work or are they for exceptional circumstances?

Position is for a LA.

Thank you all :)

  • Depends on the company.

I got one when I started with my current employer relocating from Yorkshire to London - it was around £2k and covered the cost of removals and the first month of rent (as it was a duplicated cost due to overlap). Part of it was taxable.

Could I politely ask whether you asked for a relocation package, was it offered or was there a company policy on it?

For some reason, I feel kind of cheeky asking :/

    Thanks for the reply!
  • It was part of the package offered so no negotiation required on my part.

I suggest you should ask if you want to, the worst they will say is no.

  • When i moved from Cardiff to London for a 'graduate job', I asked, and there was no relocation package.

3 months later, they had a change of heart and gave me £1k.. but I think only because I asked!

In my current place of work, no one lives remotely near the office.. we all travel on expenses to clients, so we don't do relocation money.
  • My employer offers a relocation package for professional level jobs only and only for homeowners who need to move house to take up their new position. It is quite generous - stamp duty, estate agents fees, removals expenses. Renters don't get anything though. Those who do get relocation don't need to ask/negotiate, it's part of the offer letter.

    Thanks!

I am professional level, but i'll be just renting monday-friday away from home. I'll give a go and see what they say :/:)
  • If you applied for the job knowing the location, I don't see why local authority money should be spent on paying this, especially when you are not fully moving there.

I appreciate that if you were already employed by a company and they asked you to move then this would be fair but your scenario seems very perverse to be expecting anything to me..
  • Who said anything about a local authority paying? It's not uncommon for firms to pay a relocation allowance if they want to hire the right person for the job.

I'm surprised this took so long. I've had a couple of DBS checks done in the last few months and they've only taken a couple of weeks.
