I wouldn't take your car into a dealership for p/x because you can get so much more money selling it privately

There are very valid reasons why people trade in :-

They cant do without a car, so dont have the luxury of selling their own and then "doing without" until they get another.

Their car might be "too expensive" to sell privately. Once a car breaks the £5K threshold people tend to like to have dealer facilities such as warranty, finance, trade in options, etc, etc. So selling a £20K BMW privately could be difficult (though not impossible)

you can walk into the dealership and negotiate a bigger discount because they wont have to deal with selling on your old car.

Again, depends on the car. If its a cheapie they'll get it underwritten by another trader who'll simply come and pick it up when the handover has been done. If its a car they can retail themselves its another "bite at the cherry" as they can make profit on that car too without having to go looking for good stock.

Another reason for trading in rather than sell privately is having to have insurance on both cars, if you can't sell before you buy.
