  • Everyday??? No more like four or five times a day. I love my spreadsheets; I forecast my account balances months in advance, I know exactly how much I have in my accounts and how much will be in my accounts every day for the year.

Five years ago I was scared to check my bank balance and I had no idea I owed over £17000 on my CCs, now...well my name is Cydney and I'm a spreadsheet addict!

  • I check my bank balance everyday and record it in a spreadsheet, it takes all of two minutes and has completely turned around our financial situation. I record our savings balance once a month.

I couldn't believe this thread when I read it! Not because I think you are all obsessive spreadsheets freaks but because I want to be one too but have no idea how to go about it! I am the opposite to you guys - I'm terrified of looking at my bank balance and feel physically sick thinking about doing it even if I know what the balance will be! I am a very organised person in other ways - even a bit OCD - but my phobia about money has been with me for years. I owe roughly £9k in total (CC and O/D) and I have the most wonderful personal banker who has sorted things out for me and continues to do so, however, going forward Id like to beat the fear. I know already that being on top of things makes it supposedly less scary but no, it doesn't! Im hoping that if I can get obsessive about keeping tallies and seeing balances reduce it might help? I use Excel but only for lists and cant really get my head around formulas. Is that a problem? Can anyone show me how to do this?

    Thanks!

    I've pm'd you Anna

I can't wait until payday....to number crunch, stuff my envelopes with money, write on bits of paper and see how much I have saved.

I just opened yet another savings account as I needed another pot.

    confession time!!
I do get a little nervous if I haven't checked or updated my spread sheets in a couple days.

I currently use bank tree v2 too tight to pay or broke to pay for v3 to track my finances and a couple of home grown excel spread sheets for forward budget planning. I think it is a healthy thing to have as I would not have been able to chop my debt in half this last year.
debt free as of 1/10/2014 and loving it :j
All done using YNAB and Bank tree.

I've gone from throwing my bank statements away like they're radioactive to checking them obsessively and I want to take it to the next step! :) I'm fiddling around with various free personal finance software but I can't seem to make them work the way I'd like. What do people use to keep track of their money, outgoings, balances?

Yes its pretty safe to say I'm a bit obsessed too, I know what all my account balances are at any time. I even know how much I owe on my mortgage to the pound even though I only get a yearly statement.

I can even tell you, to the penny, what all of my bills are and when they come out. It is definitely more financially sensible to be like this but I'm not convinced its very good for your mental health. :)

Can't imagine living without Barclays iPhone app now. Weirdly, I seem to almost never carry cash on me now.
  • My OH checks his at least a dozen times per day and then looks at our outgoings and compares them. He too keeps them on his phone for convenience of being able to look ALL the time. We are not in debt. The problem with his obsessive behaviour is it makes me very flippant and so I have often mentally spent our 'free' money before we even really have it lol!!

Yes, I check my figures daily. Often there is an item that I forgot about...or something that was previously cancelled reappears. I don't like being overwhelmed .....and sometimes I do get overwhelmed with loose money and receipts put on my desk by family members as well as myself.....that's when things go awry. Keep checking I say......we're all a bit obsessive about something.
  • One thing i'm definitely considering myself obsessed with is this forum!! :D ... It's becoming increasingly the most visited website in my browsing history :o
