john lewis refund showed up as not paying minimum payment

I had a refund on a purhase from john lewis which on my next partnership card account statement they sent me a warning saying I had not paid the minimum payment. This was not true because I was in zero credit after the refund. The letter they sent me said it could affect future credit.

When I called them they just said it was an anomaly in the system which shows up refunds as non payment of the minimum payment. They didn't seem at all bothered that it could affect my future credit rating.

The letter also mentioned possible legal action. I was very upset to read it particularly when I have always paid all account statements in full and on time.

I asked them to change the system but they said it was not possible. Be careful if you get a refund from john lewis as it could show up as non payment of the minimum payment and potentially affect your credit rating.

  • When you got your statement, did it tell you to make a minimum payment?

It's not uncommon for refunds not to be counted towards a min payment.
  • I ordered an item on 7 jan and gave my card details. A few days later I cancelled the order. On 31 jan I received my account statement, dated 16 jan, with the full amount of the cancelled item showing up on the statement and asking for minimum payment by 10 Feb. I called john lewis and said that I had cancelled the goods and they checked my account and said it was zero and to ignore the bill. Today I have received this months statement with a balance of zero because I didnt use my card this month but along with the statement is the notice saying I hadn't paid the minimum payment.

This is bad enough news as it isnt true but it was made worse on the phone by the so called customer resolution dept at john lewis.

The OP owes nothing on the card so there was no minimum payment to make

I had the same "threatening" letter from HSBC after I got (deliberately) scammed on ebay** but nothing came of it and nothing happened to my credit rating

John Lewis card is issued by HSBC

**wanted to test out this exact scenario, and also protected someone else from being scammed, although they would have got their money back anyway

Automated letter crossed in the system with the refund. Nothing to worry about and the next statement will show all OK. The threat is just that to make people who ignore statements to take note. It will not affect your credit rating until you have not made the minimum payment for several months.
  • A well worded letter of complaint could net a £25 apology.

    Give it a go.

There is a reason, why most cards do not count a refund towards the minimum payment.

You could just go out, buy something on your card, return it two days later for a refund. So the refund would cover the minimum payment, due a week or two later. If you did that same thing month after month, you would never pay anything back.

Yes for a rolling balance. However if the refund means the balance is zero at payment due date, then no payment is due as the balance is zero.

Any payment would take you into a positive balance which is against many cards t&cs.

It's just shoddy administration by John Lewis cards.
  • I would complain, it's not right to send a threatening letter when you have done nothing wrong, even if it is an admin error. I got £40 in a similar situation from Tesco Bank, I wasn't bothered about the cash, I just wanted an apology that didn't come with a lot of excuses attached to it.
Make £10 a day challenge in Feb £325.82/£280
    March £78/£310

IMO better to have a positive balance than to miss a payment!
