But there will be a Boots or WH Smith where OP can purchase a bottle of water and decant it into the drinking bottle.

Furthermore, the food and drink outlets are obliged to provide tap water if asked (politely).

Last year I took both an empty water bottle and an empty water 'carrier' through from Glasgow to Alaska including 2 stops with no problem, I also brought the 'carrier' back on the return journey.
I had the bottles in the netting part of my rucksack so they could be seen and although they were looked at a couple of times, no-one at security questioned me about them.

I take a Camelbak complete with 2ltr bladder or a Raidlight pack (as below)every few weeks, never had the hint of a problem

Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Only if they are licensed to serve alcohol, and you are a customer. You can't go into a pub and insist on a glass of water if you are not buying anything else.

  • Pack it with the lid taken off? That way it'll be completely clear there's nothing in it.

I went through T3 at LHR this morning with an empty bottle. No problems.
  • Recent experience is that if it is in a bag it will cause problems because they cannot tell on the machine that it is empty. I was asked to remove it after X-Ray and it was swabbed then I was allowed it back.

Should be fine if it is loose in the tray.
