WARNING - Sky changes your phone number if you switch to them

Options
I have recently switched to Sky for phone and broadband, I was previously with TalkTalk and BT before them. The switch went smoothly and on the day stated - however, I discovered on the switch day that I now had a new phone number! Sky NEVER told me, I had to find out.:(:(

We have lived in our house and had a very easy to remember phone number for nearly 30 years. I am now in the process of telling everyone that may phone us of our new number. Apparently, if I had told Sky, they would have ported my number over, but they never asked me or told me that I would be issued with a new number.

There is nothing that I can do about it, our old number is now locked away for a year:( If you are thinking of switching to sky and want to keep your phone number - make a point of asking!

On the plus side, broadband speed is up by 50% since the switch:)

Should stop spamming phone calls for a while too.

I had 5 in a row last week, 3 from Domestic Satellite services - Sky box insurance.
One from the solicitors office ( in Mumbai), about a none existant car accident.
...and a further, polite one from D&G for the washing mc warranty.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Come to that neither did mine, I guess the dreaded Talk Talk are being awkward as usual.

The number belongs to BT so it'll be returned to rangeholder.

Sky should have asked if you wanted to keep your number, but I suspect you told them you wanted to move to them from Talk Talk. Sky to TT ports aren't possible, so they've issued you a new number unaware that the number is actually owned by BT (porting from BT to Sky is possible).

I always make a point of telling them I want to keep my number.

Don't you have callerid? I never pick up on unrecognised calls - if anybody genuinely wants me whose number isn't in my phone's directory they can leave me a message.

Number porting from talktalk to Sky has been available for about 2 years. The other way (Sky to talktalk) has only been available for about 6 months though.

If the number wasn't ported then it sounds like the order wasn't processed as a number port. How did you place the order?

If you placed a number port and talktalk refused the port then the order would have failed.
  • I switched from TT to Sky over 2 years ago, number was ported without incident.

Number port agreements are reciprocal, if you want to import numbers from another provider, coz it will help you win business , you also have to agree to export your numbers to them on demand, it would be a bit unfair if it were a one way street...having said that an agreement doesn't necessarily mean you have the systems in place and staff trained to take advantage, but your competitor might

Sky to TT porting is very hit and miss. Just because you managed it without incident doesn't every one can.

Did you have a Talk Talk issued number, or did you port from BT to Talk Talk initially
