I upgraded 6-yr old Dell from XP to W7. I bought the relevant upgrade disk for about £90. Before you do it download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/downloads/upgrade-advisor
It is a complete new installation from scratch, so if you are going to do it do it before you really start using the PC, then at least you can skip the bit about backing up all your files to an external hard drive, and recovering back again afterwards.
Also after you have done the installation, you will have to allow quite a long time for over 100 security updates to be downloaded and installed.
You will need a decent broadband connection for this. When I did it PC was wired to the router, and connected to the Internet at 38Mb on fibre.0
