BIN item - wants to cancel transaction

Hi all,

I had a BIN item listed for 7 days, was due to end tomorrow lunchtime and I had 10+ watchers.

Item sold this morning and instant PayPal payment received. Ten mins after checkout completed the buyer messaged saying they don't want to go ahead with the purchase as they only just realised the item was used and they want a brand new one. Bearing in mind the item was clearly listed as used, the pictures are all of the item set up out of the box and I have said in the description how long we've had it and that batteries may need changing etc so I have no idea how the buyer can have been mistaken! The item is listed on eBay brand new in the box for on average £30 more than what mine sold for so it just seems like a silly excuse. Buyers feedback score - 1.

What is best for me to do? If I just roll over and cancel the sale I assume I'm going to have to waste my time resisting the item for another 7 days?

Thanks everyone!

Unfortunately you are in a difficult situation here. If you don't cancel then buyer may well just open an SNAD claim anyway, and if you do you have lost your BIN listing cost.

Whatever you do I would block the buyer immediately, I actually had someone who did this to me, I cancelled it all and they immediately bought it again....now I block them before I do anything else.

  • Thanks Soolin. So frustrating isn't it! Thanks for the tip on blocking, wouldn't have thought of this.

Luckily I've just had a message from Gumtree about the same item, I forgot I'd listed it on there. They are coming to collect this afternoon so it's saved me a trip to the PO if nothing else!

I recommend cancelling the transaction. You'll get your fee back etc and no money will be lost. It's very annoying and if you're in need of cash (hopefully you're financially sound and this isn't emergency money) it can be a serious pain, but I just think you'll have a lot of hassle.

I too had this once. I bought a set of tickets for my girlfriend to see Robbie Williams, best seats, only to find out about three weeks before the gig that we couldn't make it. I listed them on a 10 day auction thinking that will leave plenty of time to get them posted, special delivery. Someone bought them, procrastinated for four days, then told me he couldn't afford them. Leaving me just under 6 days to sell the tickets.

I couldn't do anything. I can't leave feedback. The tickets needed to be gone and you can only relist if you've cancelled the transaction, so he didn't even get a black mark against his account.

The buyer made a mistake; it happens - just cancel it and get your fees back.

You can also block the buyer if you like.
  • As above, cancel and get fee reimbursement from Ebay. The Paypal fees are refunded automatically less 20p.

got message stating they will pay on pick-up
Gave the details of when and where they can pick up

10 mins later Oh, so sorry have just realised you are 150 miles away, should have checked before we bought, so sorry.

All from someone with a big fat 0 feedback !!!!!!!

Looking forward to the day I have nothing left to list on eBay

I take it I have to open a case to cancel? which I have done but buyer has not replied, so I am in limbo (want to relist) but have to wait till 1st buyer agrees to cancel - is this correct?
