1st MOT Before Due Date
I need to get a first MOT on a bike I have before April 1st, as I need to tax it then.
When renewing a MOT certificate, you can do it up to a month before and still retain the original expiry date but is this the case with the first one?
The gov site isn't explicit on it but I suspect it's not the case for the first one.
I'd rather do it in the middle of March as I'm going away towards the end but I'd also like to keep the April MOT anniversary going forward if possible.
I suppose I could always SORN it for a couple of weeks if need be.

Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

You can MOT it whenever you like, the MOT station will be happy to take your money, even if it's brand new and just rolled out the showroom.0
-
You can MOT it within the month before it is due and the MOT will be valid until the due date. e.g. if the first MOT is due on 01/04/2014 and you take it in two weeks early the second MOT will be due on 01/04/2015.0

Yes it is the same as subsequent MOT's, so in your case if you have it tested in March the MOT certificate will expire at the end of March 2015.0

I don't imagine the first MOT would be any different.
I'd advise doing it as early as possible as it may pick up on things that would still be covered by the warranty. Assuming bikes need an MOT at 3 years, and that it comes with a 3 year warranty, doing it a month early gives you a month to argue with the dealership about the warranty claim

A very good point
I always advise people to get a car checked over a month before the warranty expires, preferably by someone who specialises in that make but at the very least get someone who has the same car to drive it and see if they pick up on any faults that may have crept up on you.
Sorry this seems to have wandered a bit off topic now

Thanks but it won't fail

EDIT: Nobody, except me rides that bike

It is the same as a "normal" MOT, the due date is taken from the vehicle database and used in exactly the same way.0

They can only add the extra time on to the first MOT if you take the V5C with you, so they have proof of the first reg date.0
