Hi,

I am looking to buy a new car for my wife.

Have any of you used on line dealer and who would you recommend?

Drive the deal have most competitive quote for car I want. They want £500 deposit BEFORE they will confirm any details. I would hate to spend £500 for them to say delivery is 6-8 months.

Orange Wheels and Buyacar seem to be more helpful. :T

    Do you mean a broker?
Both brokers I have used didn't require a deposit to them, the deposit was paid direct to the dealer, and depending on what car you are after, will vary the wait time, a new MK7 VW Golf could be as long as 5 months, if you don';t want a bespoke car, then the wait time will be much reduced on many makes.

Why do you need an online broker?
Save the page on drivethedeal showing the price, go in to your local dealer, show him the web page and haggle. If he can match the online price (or get close) then go with him. If not, leave your phone number, and walk away, saying that if he agrees to do a deal at that price, you'll take it. Go to another dealer and try again. Hopefully a dealer thats fairly local will agree to match the price, or at least give you a similar deal (higher price but with some goodies thrown in for free).

Your theory assumes the dealerships are desperate to get a sale, sadly many are not, and credit will save the buyer some embarrasment and the dealership will get a sale. Also it depends on the car, some Marques are discounted anyways and it would be difficult to pay the RRP. Obviously one isn't going to get a Merc AMG and Ford Mondeo prices either.

I will recommend going direct to dealership. For eg if you were buying Nissan Cars, WLMG are really good. Also remember you will get better after sales service when buying from your dealership as agents/brokers may get the car for you from a far away dealership rather than a local one to you.

Did you try carfile.net? They are really good and don't take money from you before. To use drivethdeal you have to do all the research yourself and only use them when you decide to go ahead with it, it will not work if you are unsure what deal to go for. Also £500 goes towards deposit for the car by the dealer not to DTD. I'm ordering one from DTD this week as i want the cheapest deal and don't really worry about delivery times. Also i noticed most dealers have similar delivery lead times as these cars are built to order.

Another vote for Drive the deal. The only time I would consider using a local dealership is if I wanted to take the servicing options as these can be a good deal. Our cars are serviced at a local Ford dealer and in my opinion, you aren't treated any differently depending on where you bought your car. They wouldn't know anyway as they could be leased for all they know!

Both our cars were bought through DTD and both came from Ford dealers in the West Midlands (we're in Herts). Standard delivery time of 6 weeks with both.

I am not happy with D T D pay up front fees and have scored them off my list.

I was quite impressed with the professional and prompt responses I got from www.broadspeed.com and buyacar.co.uk

I'm confused as to why you think there are upfront fees from DTD.

Unless things have changed recently (I've ordered 6 times from DTD in 10 years) then:

    (1) You place an order/enquiry online.
    (2) DTD call you to confirm details and passes your details to the dealer.
    (3) The dealer calls you to confirm details and take a £500 deposit. If there is a delay then simply refuse the order.

    From DTD's FAQ's:
Q: If I order my car from https://www.drivethedeal.com, what happens next
A: Your order will be emailed to us and we will telephone you to discuss it with you and confirm all of the details. We then place your order with the most competitive UK main dealership that we can find which will telephone within 2 working days to introduce themselves to you. From that point onwards you may deal directly with the dealer.
Q: Who do I pay my money to and when do I pay it
A: You pay the dealership a deposit of £500 (or the deposit is sometimes increased to match the value of any optional extras you add to your car) when you place the order and you pay the rest of the money to the dealership by cleared funds on or before delivery.

No monies pass between you and DTD. The commission that DTD earn from the dealer is an external matter for them and doesn't affect the price you pay.
