It might be easier (and less messy) to use an apple corer to make holes in the polystyrene blocks. You could go through from each side if the corer isn't quite long enough to go through in one. It wouldn't matter if the cuts didn't match up exactly as the hole wouldn't be seen once threaded onto your support pole.
