I don't believe it was an <ahem> license, as it was what was on the laptop when it was purchased for me by my employer (a UK university) but it may well not have been a HUP. The 2007 that replaced it after the license expired is the official university distribution.

I tried this with my works (*.EDUC) email address and it told me that I was not eligible !!

Is that a new TLD? The educational one is .EDU and that is limited to US institutions

I meant to say *.EDUC.county.GOV.UK
It is a UK site (http://www.microsofthup.com/hupuk/home.aspx?culture=en-GB) - so nothing to do with US !
