Can anyone recommend a printer scanner copier that I can use for a pc desktop, iPad and iPhone. I bought a Canon MG3250 today but I can't work out the scanning & it seems very complicated. I kept getting error messages about not being connected to LAN. I used to have an Epson and it was easy to scan. Today we printed easily from our ipads and iPhones on the Canon tho. But it took ages for the iPad and iphone to locate the printer using the canon easy-print app. We scan and copy rarely but when we do its a lifesaver. It's not totally necessary to have ipad and iPhone printing but its convenient for the oap's so they don't have to get the desktop all started up in the cold hallway. We generally print emails, and info off the web. Thanks a lot.

We've got a Canon 4250 connected to a BT Homehub, and from there to iPads 2 & 3, iPhone, two PCs and a laptop.

No issues whatsoever with connectivity, whether via wired or wireless Windoze machines, or via Airprint

What can't you work out about scanning?

Do you get the LAN error messages when going through Setup on the printer, or when trying to print?

I've got a Brother MFC-J6510DW. OK, it's an A3 capable printer but works great via Airprint with my Ipad, my PC and laptop. Was really easy to set up wirelessly and use. Scans, copies and prints quite quickly.

Maybe look at one of the smaller Brother rpinters if you don't want/need an A3 unit

I recently bought an HP Photosmart 6520 e-All in One printer (John Lewis £89.99) which is used for printing from iPad/iPhone using Airprint. Very easy to set up wirelessly, and print quaility is good for text and photos. (Haven't tried the scanner/copier yet though...)

I didn't get the error msg during set up, it all went smoothly.
The msg I get says "cannot communicate with scanner for these reasons
    Scanner is turned off
(If using LAN connection) It is disconnected from LAN
(If using wireless LAN connection) Signal strength is poor due to obstructions
Network connection is prohibited by security software
Different scanner on the network is selected
Printer is in use or an error has occurred.

Any advice would be appreciated thanks.

My previous scanner was simple - I just pressed scan lol. I don't understand why this one is complicated really. I was using the desktop to scan a document in. I haven't used an iPad or iPhone to scan. The router is in the hall and the printer is in the lounge with a wall in between. I get wifi on my iPad and iPhone ok thru that wall. I don't really want to buy a product where I have to keep it close to the PC as I may as well not buy wireless and use a cable to connect.
Any thoughts on how to use it so I keep it or otherwise I need to take it back. Or if anyone can recommend one that they use and works well then I'd be interested thanks. I'll also look at Brother as suggested. TIA.

Carry out the "Network Settings Confirmation" procedure at the bottom of this page.

One of the things it will tell you is your signal strength.

According to Canon this should be at least 80% for the device to function correctly. To achieve this you may need to move the printer. Ours was initially flush against a wall but I think this was shielding its reception. We moved it a foot away from the wall and it's fine now.

If all else fails give their tech support a ring on 0207 660 0186. We found them very helpful.

It isn't 'complicated' at all, it just can't get a connection.

It sounds like the wall or something in the wall (pipes, electrics, stud work) is interfering. Move the router or the printer/scanner to see if you can resolve this.

Are you executing the Scan from the control panel on the printer/scanner?

I'll do as suggested and move it around and also find out the signal strength as mentioned above.
I'm executing the scan from the desktop pc by opening image garden.

I haven't tried executing a scan from the app on the iPhone & iPad yet. I did try a scan by just pressing the scan button on the scanner itself but nothing happened so I assumed I had to do it from the computer by opening the programme.

If the 3250 has the same menu structure as my 4250, place scan item on glass, press Home to wake the machine, and press Scan. The LH button of three below the display is save/forward, which allows you to select whether to e-mail the scan, save it to memory card, or forward to a PC on the network. In this option, select the PC you want to use, select document type, and press black or colour to Scan. THEN it will 'do something'
  • don't forget that in order to print from any idevice you ideally need an airprint enabled printer
or you can use an app to print to the printer such as print n share installed on your ipad/iphone
