is a 32Gb Memory card(mini) for a smart Phones more expensive than a camera 32gb one ??

The smartphone memory card is mini, which comes with an adapter,

and the camera one is bigger.. but if they are both 32 GB, and the same make, which one tends to be expensiver?

(even if they are both 8gb, and the same make) - just wondering which ones are more pricey, the smart phone small ones, or the digi camera ones, generally ? and from a high street. what are the best 2-3 makes of memory cards are the best to get, in terms of a low price?

A 32gb mini SD card is the same, whether you use it in a camera or a phone.
Most photographers will tell you to use better quality and faster cards in cameras, but that's for performance and reliability, nothing to do with the type if card.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

Micro SD cards are normally more expensive because of the size.

I am no expert, but for the same make and size cards can have different 'Class'. The higher the class the higher the speed. IIRC Class 10 is good.
  • You don't really have a choice though, if it's for your phone you need the micro version.

You do, the class rating determine how fast it can be read and written to, it can be an issue in higher end camera's where the card speed can mean the camera has to pause while the data is written to a card.

You also have reliability to think about, cards fail, even the best brands, but generally the better brands are better tested and fail less. I've had more cheap cards fail on me than expensive ones. That's not to say a brands worth all the extra, but depends what you will use it for.

For my cameras I use good quality branded media, as it minimised (but does not remove) the risk if a card suddenly dying. In my phone that only had music on the card, I used a cheap card. (soince moved to an iPhone so not relevant now) . The logic was I have the music on my PC anyway so anything will do, if it fails, I simply get another and re-write the files back.

A class 10 brand card usually won't cost a lot more than a own brand special and some like Kingston have a lifetime warranty, so even if it dies they will replace it. Sandisk are probably the best brand for reliability, but they are a bit more. Looking at My memory the class 10's 32MB ones, the My Memory Own brand so a 20Mbps read speed, Kingston is the same, Sandisk do a 45mbps and P NY do a 50mbps. Faster is better.

Personally, I'd go with the SanDisk, bit more money (£18 Vs £14 for the own brand) but I've never had a SanDisk card fail on me.

However ALWAYS ALWAYS buy from a reputable dealer, there are too many fake cards on Ebay to take a risk, it may be wrongly formatted so a 16GB card (or smaller) looks like a 32 or be a cheap card with someone else printing on it. buying form a reputable source usually isn;t a lot more than Ebay and far less risk.

Funnily enough I needed a fast 32GB card recently and found the microSD to be slightly cheaper at MyMemory (a Sandisk Ultra 32GB class 10 UHS-1).

I just use it in an SD adapter.

  • I think the OP needs to post which make and model phone they have as not all mobiles play nicely with Sandisk cards.

    Samsung phones in particular.
