Whilst you are correct in saying that the company HR department can't enforce your rights, they might well be able to take some sort of internal action against the seller. (their employee).
If the employee was using company noticeboards to advertise goods for sale and if that employee was ripping off other employees who purchased items from those adverts due to the goods being faulty (and I'm not saying or implying that this did happen in this case), the company concerned might not look too favourably on the seller.
There is a clause in my work contract stating that I must not use company premises or equipment for any illegal activity, and I wouldn't be surprised to find that this sort of term is fairly common.0 -

There is nothing in the SOGA that states or even implies that buyers of goods purchased privately must test or inspect those goods before accepting them, but there is something that states the goods must be as described.
It doesn't matter if the goods were picked up in person or delivered by mail/courier as the buyers rights are exactly the same under this act.0
