Whilst I accept that local authorities do have to exercise a duty of care to us motorists, so we can drive around in cars with ridiculously low profile tyres, for the sake of an apparent improvement in 'handling'.....ie, so we can reduce the level of driver skill needed to stay on the road, perhaps?]...but , as drivers, we also have a duty to mitigate the risk of sustaining damage which might arise from a particular road condition.

After all, potholes are created by us,not some magic pothole fairy....

Flog your low profile tyres, [& alloy wheels?], and show the makers there should be a market for decent, high profile tyres?

Or, go on a driving course which teaches one to improve one's observation skills?

Personally, I resent having to pay more in tax, so's LAs can mend potholes, simply because others cannot be bothered to improve their driving skills.....

rant over.....and take an off-road driving course,,,,teaches one how to read the road surface in front? Will save the bent wheels, burst tyres, and general inconvenience these create......and off-road vehicles aren't needed, to take advantage of the skills acquired?
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

What if it'd not been a pothole, but an anvil, fallen off the back of a truck? Or a basket of kittens, fallen from the back of a car driven by a nun...?

Kittens must be protected at all costs - the nuns can take care of themselves.

If the nuns are lying down then they just look like a very bumpy zebra crossing

The nun should probably be reported to the RSPCA...

according to those who live [ie, float around] in Somerset, the RSPCA are now 'first responders.....'

[according to initial reports, RSPCA were first on the scene during the floods...say s a lot about the rest, eh?]

so, when one crashes 'n burns, the RSPCA will be first on the scene......checking for kittens?

Too busy dealing with more major incidents elsewhere in the affected area...?
  • Through no fault of my own, I seem to have picked up a screw in my car's rear tyre. My car is a grey Volvo S60, and gives very good mpg.

I have checked and a new Michelin tyre to match the other 3 is about £120.00.

Who can I claim compensation for this from ? I don't know where the tyre picked up the screw, it may have been in my local authority, or the one next to me, or the M25, or one in Kent, or possibly Tesco's car park.

If it helps, although not a pensioner, I probably will be when I reach retirement age.

What size screw is it? Length? Cross head or straight? Self tapping, wood or metal?

I'm sorry but without answers to these questions then we are unable to help you

You should trade the car in and get a hybrid.

Then you will have four tyres without screws in. And you will get free road tax.

If you resent that, do you also resent the successful claims that members of the public bring against the LAs because the LAs fail in their duty of care to maintain carriageways??

Can't have it both ways. ;)
