So you are saying the MOD would run a stock version of Vista???

XP I believe they use between users, and I don't think they modify it from what I'm told.

I'd bet the MOD like any big business have VLK's - they're not buying individual copies with each pc like home users do. So to a great extent, so long as they have enough XP licenses, they could use it for the next 10 years (or however much longer they wanted) without caring what Microsoft do.

I could just imagine it... There they are playing Quake 4 that they have downloaded and a unidentified jet enters US airspace... Then just when they want to launch a few jets to intercept... they get

WGA has identified your licence is invalid. Please purchase a full licence to continue using windows... And then you cant even save your game

That coupled with updates every week and bugs and hackers they must really be in a bad state... God even the company I work for runs modiied versions of XP to stop hackers and remove user installations. They even have Embedded versions for internet access as well as key ports closed as to help protect from outside intrusions.

Vista is the best thing since sliced bread.

I've got one of these which I bought for an XP machine about 2 years ago.

The 1st tuner uses the PCI slot, the 2nd an internal USB connector. Whilst the PCI tuner works perfectly under Vista the USB one gives a blank screen - even though it does give a signal strength. If anyone has an idea what's wrong I'd be very happy

That's not really "modifying" XP. It's typical permissions and network management. This will apply to "forcing" specified updates, setting permissions and access through the domain etc... Got a friend that works there.

I'm just talking on a user basis as per my original post. Anything sensative, or other processes/protocols will be handled by a different system, but the typical users will most likely have an XP desktop to do any work/email/data management/word processing etc from.

So they do not use stock versions as I said... Even with adding permissions it is still modified. It isnt as it came from the box or off the store shelves so the answer would be they dont use stock. The system is changed and modified to suit thier needs.. Things stripped out and things added.

I said they would have a system specifically written (modified) for them which it will have been. Someone would have been brought in to make XP work exactly how THEY want it. It will be different to every other version and will be therefore Changed/Modified to best suit. And thier other versions will not be stock, off the shelves working copies but ones modified so that people cant have unrestricted access to internet or other systems.

When you start to add software, restrictions and permissions you are modifying it for your own purpose. Some of the basic features will be removed as well and thier own software added.

The original argument you got involved in was that the OP said imagine trying to sell it to the MOD. I said they wouldnt use stock but have thier own versions written. This was meant in a compatability sense. I was meaning there is no way the MOD would go out and buy a stock version of VISTA and install it. If they were installing VISTA it would have the Driver support they needed.

Built a new PC and put Vista Business on it... I've had no problems, and it's so fast and sleek. Not saying XP wouldn't be fast, but that's not got the eye-candy  Seems to be better all round: XP had a few annoying issues for me.

Getting Vista Business 64-bit soon, so hopefully no problems.

And it's all freeeeee....! (and legal!) One of the advantages of being a student! :D

Ah ok. Misunderstanding when you said "modify". I was under the assumption that it was obvious the MOD, actually any reasonably sized/run business isn't going to use an out of the box XP Pro per pc. I thought you meant modify as in actually changing XP (ie not setting it up or customising it), and was looking from the point of view that you're not modifying, but setting up existing functionality.
