Tethering - help!

Hey all,

I am with T-Mobile on an unlimited data plan and have been since March 13.

I am away on a course for a few weeks and so have set up my laptop to my phone via tethering - all working fine.

However, I contacted T-Mobile to ask if there will be charges or if it comes under unlimited data.

The person I spoke to was very unsure, but said no tethering is not included and i cannot purchase an addon enabling tethering - therefore tethering is not possible.

I didn't mention I was using the internet as we spoke, but can anyone offer advice? Am I going to be charged? How come I am tethered now if it isn't possible?!

You will not be charged for tethering. That stopped years ago. So no worries there.

Depending on your plan you may be blocked from tethering though. Based on what you said you may be on the full monty plan which has unlimited data but does not allow tethering as per the T&C.

The best thing to do is just try it and see if it works. Some users have reported tethering works even though it's technically blocked. The most important thing to remember though is that you won't be charged for it. But T-Mobile could stop the tethering aspect at any time.

Yes, I am on the Full Monty package and yes tethering is working.

!!!!!!, I should have posted here first - have I just highlighted this to them and they can cut my tethering?

Good news about the billing though - thanks for that - I am a noob to tethering!

Basically it's one of those situations where T-Mobile "officially" tell you that you can't do something when you actually can do it anyway.

Obviously T-Mobile do reserve the right to block you tethering but it seems they haven't for now (or that they have no way to). My suggestion is just use it when you need to. The likelihood of them cutting off tethering is fairly low so no need to worry. Just don't be surprised or complain if they do. That's all I'm saying.

It's their network and they can do what they like. I think 'Full Monty' is false advertising myself if they don't allow tethering. I'm on t-Mobile now, maybe on a newer tariff than you, and I made sure that tethering was allowed before I joined. I was on o2 before that and I know that they let you use your data as you please, so maybe your loyalty isn't being rewarded...
  • Does the term 'tethering' include WiFi hotspotting with your mobile?
