  • Use optical cable OR HDMI, but not both at the same time.

axel - stuff goes FROM the PS4, Sky box TO the TV. Sorry for being pedantic, but that's the direction, the surround sound is in the middle, and the TV is at the end.
As a general rule, you don't want sound going THROUGH your TV, most of them will downmix any surround sound to stereo.
You're limited on connections - If I remember right you've only got 1 HDMI input on the surround sound. Put the PS4 into this. Put another HDMI from the Surround sound into HDMI 1 on the TV. That's the PS4 sorted.
Now, get an HDMI from the Sky box to HDMI 2. That gets you picture and sound from your Sky on the TV. Finally, you need to connect an optical from the Sky box to the Surround Sound.
Go through the sound settings on the PS4 to make sure it knows it can throw fancy surround sound down the HDMI.
Goto the sound settings on the Sky box and make sure you have Dolby D selected for the optical output. For the HDMI output (if you have the newest Sky software) you should try Dolby D. My TV didn't like that so I had to use stereo.
  • Hey

thanks for the help, i noticed when i put the optical cable between surround sound and ps4 sounded awesome and then swapped over to sky sounded awsome

I read about your HDMI link from surround sound to Sky box and from Surround to TV..

My surround sound only has a HDMI out i believe this is plugged into my TV atm think that means i baught a cheap surround sound and i have to just swap the optic cable from ps4 to sky box when ever i want to use either is this correct?

Sorry again for sounding so dumb haha! I noticed can buy HDMI splitters.. Could i plug one of them in and have a cable going from Surround sound to HDMI splitter then one from splitter to PS4 and one from splitter to TV would that work or does it send 'in' and 'out' signals?

    Cheers
  • A splitter takes one source and sends it to multiple receivers.

A switch takes multiple sources and allows you to send one of them to a single receiver

Your cinema system only has an HDMI output so you cannot do anything to feed it with an HDMI input

Likewise it only as a single Optical connection which is input only.

You could get an Optical Switch to allow you to have both boxes plugged in with their optical cables and then you just switch the source rather than having to unplug/replug the cable.

I had exactly the same experience with a Panasonic BTT270, apparently Sky boxes output Dolby surround sound set at a relatively low volume level. There used to be an output volume control in the Sky settings but this is not present on the new SKY HD box.

Dedicated AV amplifiers generally have a setting to adjust the relative volume of each input so it is not necessary to adjust the master volume when changing sources.
My Panasonic did not have this and from a quick read of the instructions neither does yours so I think you are stuck with the issue.

Yep, your system is rubbish for what you want. You've got a grand total of:
    1 HDMI out (with ARC)
    1 optical in,
    1 stereo phono in.
This is really just meant to be used with a TV, or maximum 1 set top box.
Take it back and buy something better - with 1 or 2 HDMI inputs, and 1 optical digital input would be the minimum.
    But for this current system:
HDMI from Surround Sound to TV
    HDMI from Sky to TV
    HDMI from PS4 to TV
optical digital from Sky to Surround Sound.
And you unplug the optical digital from the back of the Sky, and plug it into the back of the PS4 when you want to use it.
Remember - you'll still get sound through the TV from the Sky box, so maybe you don't always need to use the optical digital for it.
An optical switch, as InsideInsurance says, would save the plugging/unplugging, but I've no experience of them.
