Hi All,
I have bought myself a Panasonic Surround Sound system.. admittedly it wasn't that expensive £200
I think i have connected something wrong or something because if i put a DVD in the surround sound and have the volume HALF 50% it shakes my whole house, subwoofer loud, volume immense.. Experience AMAZING
But when i play on my TV - sky, at 100% its fairly loud but not the same quality as if a dvd is in.
I have it wired like this:
Speaker cables into surround sound DVD player
HDMI lead from surround sound dvd player to TV
Optical Lead from surround sound dvd player to TV
I did notice in settings that 'DVD, Surround sound system' is set to 5.1 dolby surround sound digital
but the TV is set to something else and the only two options i can pick for that is 5.1 surround sound or 2.1 surround sound not dolby digital
Wondering if i have done something wrong or this is just how it is
Cheers

You haven't mentioned how the Sky box is connected to anything. Can I guess that the only way the sound is getting from the Sky box to the surround sound is via the TV? Don't do that - TV's very often downmix 5.1 to 2.0 when they pass it through. The TV is meant to be a dead end, not a junction. So, looking at this Panasonic, you've got one HDMI with ARC. You should leave this connected to the TV. ARC is Audio Return Channel, which means that if your TV supports it, and you turn it on, the sound can travel 'back down' the HDMI lead into the Panasonic - this means anything the TV shows, you can hear.
In this case, unplug the optical lead from the TV, and plug it into the Sky box. This is how you get sound from the Sky into the Panasonic. Go into the settings menu (spanner along the top?) and sound, and make sure the optical digital is set to Dolby D and not Stereo.
This means the Sky box will pass 5.1 sound to the Panasonic, when it's being broadcast.
I assume your Sky is connected to your TV via HDMI, in which case you can still listen to it through the TV if you can't be bothered with the surround sound for news etc.
Make sense?0 -
Sky + and HD only passes DD etc via its Optical Connection and not HDMI
I am confused what the optical cable is for from the TV to the surround system? Do you use the freeview tuner in the TV or something instead of the Sky box at times?
How is the Sky box connected up? Which Sky box do you have?0 -

some Panasonic TV's do NOT decode Dolby digital sound on the HDMI connection.0

When setting up surround I try not to use to the TV if at all possible for multiple media applications. results ive had is video/sound sync delay, volume and quality issues.
I try to use the optical out from my sky+box-to-blueray/dvd surround box. choose the correct audio setting in the sky+ audio menu, ALSO NOTE some TV programs are NOT broadcast with DD 5.1 audio.
blueray/dvd-HDMI output - TV HDMI INPUT and use the relevant TV audio settings.
I use high speed 24GHZ HDMI cable made by monster although that's my choice and costs.
I don't put any splitter box in between media I elect to connect direct to other media sources.0 -

Could well be, was about 18 months ago when Sky confirmed that HDMI still wasnt sending DD. When was the update sent?
Actually a quick google says that April last year updates were sent out but was only for certain models of the HD box. Are the updates now for all boxes?0 -
The slightly shinier TV guide would be a giveaway, and it's all but the very oldest HD boxes (if you have one, cry to them and they'll surely give you a new one). Telltale, I THINK is if you go into the sound settings you can now see and set Dolby D or Stereo on both HDMI and optical?0

Presumably the output is identical to the Optical and so no point me finding where I've put the AVR control to change the input from optical to HDMI?0 -
Hi,
sorry yeah i didnt give much information - i am 23 and just moved out on my own you see so without paying someone to come set up i set it up to the best of my knowledge.. Which was wrong HA!
My set up is like this:-
Panasonic TV
Panasonic Surround Sound
Sky Box
PS4
I have the surround sound plugged into TV with HDMI and Optic cable, and then my Sky box and PS4 is plugged into TV with HDMI.
SO i am guessing i did this wrong and the way to do it is to put the Optical cable into the sky box?
Next question what about the PS4 is there an optic splitter or something like that so i can have the cable going to both sky + ps4 or will this work through HDMI through TV
again my knowledge on TV's etc is minimal
appreciate the help and if you can talk to me as a pure beginner so tell me were to put what cables from what box to were ha that would be greatly appreciated!
THanks Guys0
