    What engine?
  • Diesel or petrol?

I was quoted £600-£700 for a new fuel pump on a Mondeo 2.0 TDCi

If it's a diesel and the pump has failed catastrophically it may have caused further damage so you are looking at a bigger bill than that.

    Petrol

Quick google finds the pump for less than a hundred quid from various sources. Fitting won't be a particularly big job - can't see it being more than an hour.

Always assuming, of course, it really is the pump and not an electrical issue in the feed to it.
  • Fuel pumps are known for failing on these, therefore more than likely AA diagnose will be correct.
Petrol tank needs to come down to replace the pump as the inspection hole below the seats doesn't line up with the pump/tank unit.
New pump around £100 and allow around 1.5 hrs max labour in case the securing, bolts give problems/seized.
If it isn't broken, don't try to fix it.

I have this theory that somewhere in the dim and distant past, a senior production engineer for a large car manufacturer found out his missus was having an affair with a mechanic. Ever since then, revenge has been the aim...

In which case wouldn't making motors easy to fix be his revenge, thus reducing the demand for mechanics since more DIYers can perform such tasks. Rather than increasing the demand, thus price that mechanics can charge ;)

Ok, want to let everyone know what is untrue about what i have posted.
To many people on this board looking to rip posts to pieces.
Just because you have a lot of numbers next to your post count doesn't mean you know the answer.

Umm, I didn't say you were wrong. I was shaking my head sadly at the f'wittery involved in putting the pump offset from the hole. As the joke following made very clear.

Sorry if you were confused by that.

    No problem, my misunderstanding.

Just seems everytime I post "correct" information, someone with a nice big high number next to their post count comes on and has a go, posting up totally wrong information.
