Nissan Qashqai Spare Wheel

I am usually on the Mortgage Free Wannabe thread, so this is a new post for me in the Motoring section :).

I have just purchased a 62 plate Nissan Quashqai 1.5 DCi N-Tec+ (which I will be picking up on Wednesday). I noticed that it didn't have a spare wheel and it comes with a can of foam. I was told that they don't come with spare wheels as 'it's all about minimising weight in the car'.

I have never used foam before as I have a spare wheel in my car and have always called the AA out when I've had a puncture. I feel a little embarrassed asking this :o but if I have a puncture would the AA still come out and do the foam for me as I've not used it before?

I've had a think about it and I would feel safer with a spare wheel as my reasoning is, is that if I have a blow-out then surely the foam is no use and my car would have to be towed away? and having a spare wheel may be cheaper than using foam as sometimes all I've needed to have done is have the puncture repaired rather than the whole tyre replaced?

Just wondering if I should just stick to the can of foam or am I better off getting a spare wheel? If I should get a spare wheel do I buy it from Nissan or elsewhere? Also, does anyone know what price they are as my new car has 18inch wheels?

Thanks in advance (sorry about my lack of knowledge about these things :o).

Totally share your worry with the risk you're accepting with this state of affairs. We bought a brand new VW Sharan with alloys 5 months ago with the same issue after having owned an older model Sharan with a viable 1 for 1 spare for 10 years. The new one came with a compressor and can of foam. We opted for a steel spare off Ebay plus buying a jack, hook for puling off the hub cover and wheel brace for peace of mind as these were not provided, your call. Have to say that all punctures were slow ones in these 10 years, so easily sorted without needing a spare. We've accepted the increased weight fuel consumtion from carrying this baggage. You can opt for only doing this on long jouneys if you want with more hassle.

Definitely get yourself a spare wheel.

You should be able to get a spare steel wheel, tyre and jack for around £250. A budget tyre will do and a steel wheel won't cost too much. A Nissan dealer will be able to supply them for you.

It doesn't even need a blow out to make the foam kit useless, last week I was driving a courtesy car which got a puncture and the foam wasn't effective enough to seal the puncture.

All you need to buy is a space-saver narrow wheel and the appropriate tyre.

Much cheaper and doesn't take up so much room.

Only for emergency use at reduced speed - 50 mph - but that's all you want it for.

A full sized normal spare takes up too much room.

The same amount of room the one you take off will. Where are the spares carried on that car?

I know this site is moneysaving but on ebay there is a complete spare wheel, tyre, wheel brace and jack for £200 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NISSAN-QASHQAI-SPARE-WHEEL-KIT-WITH-TYRE-/271225685325?pt=UK_CarParts_Acc_Wheels_tyres_Rims_Car_Wheels_ET&fits=Model%3AQashqai&hash=item3f264f854d in the ad it says take out trim in boot. I have a zafira and mine came without a spare just foam and a pump my space saver is just strapped in the boot.

That's a bargain - hassle free- all the bits you need.

My mother went through the Qashquai spare wheel palaver last year. Unless you want to raise the boot floor a standard size spare won't fit. A space saver will. I ended up getting her a (new) space saver rim off eBay for £40 and the appropriate size space saver tyre from one of the online suppliers... about £80. Silly money for what they are. Somebody gave her a jack and she bought a spider wheelbrace from a local car parts place.

The whole caboodle came in at just under £130. About the same as Nissan were asking for their 'genuine accessory' spare wheel kit... which didn't come with a tyre fitted.

Thank you for all the replies, they are very helpful :). I will look into getting a Space Saver wheel, as it will give me some peace of mind. For me I think it will at least mean that I can drive my car to the garage to get a puncture repaired, rather than having to have it towed to my home and then figuring out how I will get it to a garage if the foam doesn't work .
  • Hi. I had a huge bolt go through my qashqai tyre after a week of owning it from new. The foam was useless. Luckily I was 1/4 mile away from a tyre fitters and risked driving sheepishly there.
New tyre - £250 a week before Christmas!! Bah humbug.
I would defiantly recommend buying one. Very poor that Nissan don't supply one on a £20.000 car.

"All about minimising weight in the car"....nice one! More likely saving the manufacturer a bit of money.
