  • There is a Kia Ceed fairly local to us but it is 1 1.6 diesel and an automatic...is this something we should consider? We mostly do local driving (school run etc) but do travel across France once a year and the odd trip down to Cornwall. Haven't really considered diesel before and never drive an automatic. Advice please! (you've all been so helpful so far!)

For school runs forget a diesel - :( - it'll never get up to the proper temperature and then you'll have problems with the Diesel Particulate Filter.

    Modern autos are great though.
  • Yeah, that's what I thought...but it's local and nearly £1k cheaper than the nearest petrol, and will still have 3 years of of the 7 year warranty on it. Plus it's a 3 spec with all the add ons. Should I be swayed?

    Hmmmm. That's a difficult decision.

If it was to get at least an hours non-stop drive at least once a week I might just be prepared to chance it.

But a 5 to 10 miles, twice a day school run type of thing, is not good for a diesel at all.

If the DPF went wrong then would the warranty cover it?

Best to ask exactly what is, and more importantly, what is not, covered by the warranty.

    How about this?

Don't know if you are anywhere near Manchester though.

I have one of these, albeit a diesel, and the load area is big and they come with roof rails.
  • Looking for a more specific answer but Honest John in November 2012 said the following:

"It won't cover the DPF if you stuff it, full of soot form repeated short runs from cols. But to be fair I have yet to hear of a DFP failure on a KIA."

Not sure where that leaves us...will keep looking for a proper answer!
  • Hmmm, have had a quick read of the warranty online an it doesn't specifically mention it as an exclusion.

I would be very careful as they may class the DPF a 'service item' a bit like oil-filters and air-filters.

The DPF may have an expected life of say 100,000 miles, but what would be the situation if it failed at say 60,000?

I doubt if the full warranty is available on line - it's likely to be several pages of small print and what's on line is a summary of the main points.

I would ask specific questions of the selling dealer - hopefully you're talking about a KIA dealer who knows what he's talking about.
  • This specific car is from a private seller. OH has tried ringing the service department of our nearest dealer but they were busy so he's going to try again in a bit.

Good idea - and good luck.

Please post the results of the enquiry as I'm very interested as I have a diesel within warranty and my use is a mixture of short journeys - 30 miles-ish a day and then long hauls across Europe to Austria and even further South in the holidays.
