You can do tiling yourself , but they are 250 a day for a reason

Yes, tiling is BORING! Tedious and boring.

But it's so easy to do, so a good way to save money.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

We have just had a bathroom changed into a shower room, 4.2m by 3.8m tiled floor to ceiling. Bought tiles from Wickes for £320, paid a tiler £500 to do the work took 2.5 days.
  • I've just done a bathroom, ensuite and cloakroom in my house.
16m2 of tiles were £160 from Tile Giant...Reflections White bumpy 20x30cm tiles, Grout was about £30 and the adhesive and spacers I got from Toolstation as it was much cheaper. £10 for a B&Q tilecutter and a couple of quid for adhesive/grout spreader.
Very therapeutic and as long as you don't rush then the end result can be great. A pro tiler would have done it better, but I am more than happy with the end result. I found it easier to butter the tiles than the walls, as I was either covering too small or larger an area and the adhesive was slopping on the floor a bit. I only had one difficult cut, needing an "L" shaped tile, so drilled it along one line and run in through the tile cutter on the other so it snapped perfectly. (Took me about 5 tiles before I succeeded, but that's why you buy 10% more, then you can return full boxes at the end of the project.
Just need to spray some waterproofer on the grout and job's done.

Make sure you put some old towels in the bath in case you drop a tile...I nearly got caught out with a near miss on my new Iflo bath.

I find tiling easy too, but I think you have an aptitude for it (eye for detail and lots of patience) - also it helps if it's an "easy" shaped room. I'm wildly OCD so it takes me 5 times longer than it would a pro, but I have only myself to blame if I am unhappy with the finish!

  • Just been quoted £750
To take out old bath and shower
    Pull off pvc cladding
put back old bath and shower
re tile the area where cladding been taken off.
I think this is quite steep maximum tiling area is 3sqm
  • Watch out in regards in Topps Tiles you're paying for their advertising costs in their products. We found Tile Giant with the same stock (from same supplier) for much cheaper... £29 per sqm down to £12 per sqm for the same product!

Just a bit of shopping around could save you quite a sum overall.

Just remember that when you remove the old tile you may well need to plan for the walls to be reskimmed, and wait for that to dry before retiling them!

I've just tiled my kitchen - very pleased with the result and will be doing my own bathroom next year, you need a good eye for detail and to follow professional advice- plumbline, spirit level etc so it is tedious and boring, but totally doable yourself!

One reason we did it ourselves is that they charge you £500 or so for labour and it's still not perfect (I defy anyone to perfectly cut an L shaped tile! at least this way I only had myself to blame for those tiny imperfections.

    Tiling is a doddle.
If people are charging a grand a week to tile then im in the wrong industry.

Woah! It's really not that easy to get it right. I've tiled walls myself and I'll tell you now that the difference between a DIY tiled wall and one by a great tiler is vast. I will only use one tiler now, his work is an absolute art and he books months in advance.
