Moving - what is needed?

Hiya, we'll be moving out of rented accommodation soon into a bought property (I can't wait) And I'm wondering what will be needed right away?
The things that I have on my list is : Toilet paper, toilet seat, light bulbs, kettle, teabags, mugs and milk (Moving everything ourselves and none of us take sugar.)
We'll be giving the place a good clean before we move anything in and also introducing the dogs to the place.
Is there anything I've missed out that's needed before moving all of our stuff in? I feel like there's something big that I'm forgetting!
We'll be using the partners work van, but the road is a close. Should I pop a letter in to neighbours to apologise in case he blocks the road slightly? There is parking room but not many spots near our to-be house.

Thank you in advance. :D

We moved ourselves to save money exactly a year ago. Fine if u haven't got much stuff. Nightmare for us who had family to help too.
Neighbours will see u coming with van and know what's happening so wouldn't bother with notes.
We had nothing to eat all day when moving. I went for fish and chips at 7pm to find a flooded lounge from the aquarium when I got back but that's another story!
    Good luck!
Have a box with plates, cutlery mugs etc .

Don't forget all your cleaning products, cloths, towels etc if you are cleaning it first. You may want to put something up at the windows if they aren't leaving curtains so people can't nose in and see its empty.

Also make sure you take all your meter readings on the first day. Have tools incase you need to mend anything. Some people on here talk about changing locks so do that if you are going to.

Don't forget to have sheets etc. ready for your bed, plus towels & other items you'd use in the bathroom.

Toaster is handy for a quick slice of toast or toasted sandwich if peckish & If there is already a cooker/hob installed, then a couple of saucepans to hand will be very useful too. Other things you might need pretty quickly are tin opener, something for a headache, oh & a vase.

I mention vase as when I moved in I had flowers sent to me as a new home welcome & vases were all packed away in a hard to reach box at the bottom of a huge pile. My sister ended up fashioning me one out of an empty plastic milk bottle, buy cutting off the top. It did the job!
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

I second the bedding. In fact making the bed is the first thing I do when I move now. It's nice to know that it's already done at the end of the day when you're shattered so that you can collapse straight into bed.
  • I'll wash and pack some bedding today, then. :D
The hob isn't installed there and will probably be one of the last things we'll move so pans will be packed normally. However I will do that toaster idea! I'll bring some marmite as well just to annoy the OH. :P

I would have never thought of a vase! I don't even own any since our current flat is too small to fit a table in. (We decided huge desks were more important haha.) (Moving into a house will be a big shock on us I think, lol.)
Guess I'll pop down town and have a nosey tomorrow morning :) Or maybe I'll do it on friday because we have no room here with boxes right now.

The first thing we're moving is Sofas so the dogs have somewhere to sleep on while we're moving everything. Then it's the bed which we'll make up there and then, then everything else :)

Have to say I'm so excited lol. :D
Thanks again for all the amazing advice :)
  • Just a note for your bedding.....I have moved several times (and again in 2 weeks time!) so consider myself an old pro! Lol. Wash your bedding already on your bed and replace with clean ones today, in the morning, just peel your sheet up and roll duvet up inside it. Slide into a bin bag and plonk on your bed at new house when bed in place. Save you having a dirty set of bedding to deal with at your new house. Hope that makes sense ;) :rotfl:

Moved on Thursday... The very first thing you'll need after you've made a cuppa is bin bags and your recycling sacks!! Also scissors.

Agree with the above re bedding. We had a removal truck but put our bedding in the car. Making the bed was the first thing we did after the removal men had brought it in.

Make sure you also have your local Dominos phone number handy for dinner, as you probably won't have internet access to order online. ;)

Get skimmed milk. It will survive outside the fridge the longest. :)

    Hi
I would pack bathroom stuff in a box and take it 1st trip. Loo paper, loo cleaner soap and a towel plus maybe bath stuff or shower gel (saves hunting around when you want to wash)
Keep handy a camera or a notebook to record meter readings, bin bags, phone chargers (in case there is no landline) and dog food.
Also make a list of all who need to be told you have moved, I know someone who forgot to tell DVLA then mislaid their licence. Luckily the owners of the old property were helpful as DVLA will only send to the last address on the licence.
    Good luck
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)
  • Well my order of moving stuff is changing because of helpful tips :D
I'll definitely follow that bedding advise! We're moving on the weekend so I'll change the new bedding on Friday then.
We're going to buy bathroom stuff all from scratch probably including towels (unless we find ours. I'm sure anyone here with dogs knows how stuff goes missing!)
We'll probably stop off at asda on the way with moving the sofas. Since sofas are first it makes sense to include the bathroom stuff with that.. we also have a new toilet seat just in case lol!
Thanks for the milk tip. I was actually thinking of getting that milk that you can store in cupboards? However your idea is probably better since I'm sure we'll have some left over lol.
I have the internet and a camera on my phone so that's sorted. I also already have dominoes number saved already lol! My OH love's it and normally it's me ordering it for him.
I'll pick up the bin bags and recycling sacks today and stick them in a clearly labelled bag for life right by our door. I didn't even think of that so thank you for that idea :)
  • Don't forget to take a water bowl for the dogs and poop a scoop bags incase they go in your neighbours gardens whilst you're moving and they're marking territory.
If its a rented property take lots of date stamped photos. :) and try to arrange a Tesco shop to come a day or two after :)
