Buying a car without V5C form
I viewed a car from a private seller recently and I liked it but unfortunately the seller doesn't have the V5C form with it. He says he brought the car fairly recently from a dealer (he bought it for his wife but she doesn't like it so he's selling it) and he didn't receive the V5C form when he brought it. He's asked them to send it to him but he hasn't received it yet.
Would it be OK to purchase this car without the V5C form, and is there a way that I can protect myself should there be an issue in attaining it, like making sure he writes out a receipt or something like that?

Tell him to contact you when the v5 arrives - until then I wouldnt touch it to be honest.0 -

This is highly suspicious.
He should have been given the new keeper part of the V5C when he drove the car away from the dealer - after he completed the change of owner part of it for the dealer to send to DVLA.
It's the DVLA who sends the new V5C to the new keeper.
Things are NOT right.
Tell him to get in touch with you once he has the V5C in his name with his address on it.
Do NOT part with any cash until then - and after you have checked for any outstanding finance on the car.0 -
I wouldn't necessarily be suspicious....
However, I would do an HPI check on the vehicle & I would phone DVLA quoting the registration & mentioning that you are considering purchasing, & asking if they have recently received & are processing a V5 for it.
If you are happy, I would then negotiate a reduction for the new V5.... ( think it's £25 for a replacement but if you are to be the new keeper & are not given it, I don't think you have to pay)
You could also ask the current owner if he has the green slip (which is the only part he should have if he's just purchased it)
Be aware that if you do buy the vehicle & it doesn't have any tax, you will not be able to drive it until you receive the new log book to be able to get it taxed.... Just a thought
Also, see if he has 2 keys.....If it's slightly dodgy, he probably won't have both...0 -
when he bought the car he should have had the V5C new keeper supplement at the very least
if he has not got that then i would walk
if he did have the new keeper supplement with his details on then i would belive his story but no paperwork then for me it would be no sale0 -
Don't buy it without the V5c.
Do a search on "logbook loans" to find out one reason why the V5 could be missing.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Surely if there was a logbook loan against the vehicle and the seller was trying to deceive, then they would just order a replacement V5 to make things look legit?0 -

I know it's in the Daily Fail but it might be true0 -
Then you might spot that the change of keeper was ages before the date of issue of the V5, but easily explained as it being a "new red one" issued when the DVLA "lost" millions of blank green/blue ones......
I suppose the £25 fee and the long wait puts some people off getting one.ilikewatch wrote: »Surely if there was a logbook loan against the vehicle and the seller was trying to deceive, then they would just order a replacement V5 to make things look legit?I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Small detail... Somebody trying to flog a car that's security against a loan they have no intention of repaying is not _necessarily_ MENSA material, so they might not think of such simple tricks.0
