An Australian mobile provider Telstra spends millions of dollars testing phones it sells and gives them a blue tick if they perform better esp reception wise and esp in rural areas.

And if you know any Australians, Telstra has a very poor reputation!

This is the UK, so whatever the providers in different countries are doing is quite irrelevant
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

I had a relative who spent 6 months there last year and he raves about how good they were. He started with a cheaper provider and really struggled. He then moved to Telstra although it was more expensive and was impressed. He is convinced 3g was better there than it has been since moving back to the UK.

Is poor reception on the same network after changing a handset unknown in UK?

Of course not, but until a testing procedure is acknowledged, accepted, and proven to it's target audience then it isn't worth two bob.

Well, your main objection originally was that it was a 'different country'.

And proven by whom? If some Australian provider, unlike UK ones, cares about their customers and helps them with selection of the right handset, why is it 'irrelevant' for UK? I think the physics of signal transmission is the same in all countries. It's not a rocket science to compare different handsets in some remote area with poor signal.
