How to sell my car?
Hi, I am totally naive about cars but have one to sell as I got a car through my work this week.
I was planning to take the easy option with we buy any car but the quote is very low. I have taken pics and put it on gumtree and am thinking of putting it in autotrader online.
I have only ever traded cars in before so want to make sure I don't walk into any common traps. The car is only 2 years old and I am hoping to get around £7k for it (I have checked what they go for with similar mileage and age and this is the middle ground).
Obviously cash isn't likely to be how people would want to pay and the charges with PayPal are quite high - do most people do bank transfers or cheques or some other way?
Any suggestions in where to sell it if nothing comes from gumtree or autotrader? Do garages buy cars from people or just take them as trade ins?
Any help or guidance would be appreciated

Are you comparing private seller prices? Dont forget dealers offer a buyer some protection and a warranty of some form.
If you accept paypal. I will give you £1.50 for the car. Because thats more than your going to get from them. Its a scammers dream.
Pay by paypal then do a chargeback.
Bank transfers are good as long as you can get it at the time. Cheques no.. Bankers draft yes if you see them draw it from your local branch.
Ebay.. Never had an issue with ebay.
What did WBAC offer?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
They offered £6300 but privately and by trade there are ones on autotrader going for £8k. I don't think I am being greedy but once they take money off just because they can and I pay the £75 (I think it's something like that) transaction fee it is likely to be in the high £5000's which isn't great.
How do you take payments when you use ebay? Same as you would from an ad in the paper? I thought there was a requirement that you had to offered paypal? Is this not the case with cars?If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -
I have just checked ebay and they are selling on there for between £7-8.5k for the same year and model so we buy any car price is def too low.If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0

Just to repeat what a previous poster has said, DO NOT ACCEPT PAYPAL.
There is no reason the buyer can't do a bank transfer, they usually show within about 15 minutes nowadays.0 -
£7k - £8.5k is the advertised price. They may knock £1000 off for a quick cash sale.
But are they selling for that or advertised at that? Big difference.
As i mentioned also a dealer has to offer some form of protection to a buyer so need to add that into the price.
Is something fails soon after selling the car they need to pay for repairs. A private seller wont.
Dont forget the longer you keep it the less your going to get also. New plate change soon. So your car will appear older to buyers.
What car is it? Exact model/year engine etc?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Thanks for the link, interesting and doesn't reflect what I have seen them for sale but as someone pointed out earlier, for sale doesn't mean sold!
It is a 61 plate so I changed the settings and it isn't much better although mine does have lower mileage than the example and is in pristine condition. The adjusted prices are 5,815-6,670.If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -
If you are looking for prices, rather than looking at the for sale price, take a look on the likes of eBay for the price for ones which sold. But generally, Parker's is considered a good guid to the price. If you've done 10,000 miles fewer, then it might be worth a little more, but if you're within about 2,000 miles per year, hen their prices will be close to spot on.1.
