Thanks to this forum I have now bought a new Dell PC with Vista Home Premium as the OS.
When it arrives, what is the best way to transfer my old files from my old PC, bearing in mind the switch to Vista.
Thanks

external backup drive or usb stick depending on how many files you have0
-
what are you looking to transfer?
documents and favorites are easy, just copy them to your chosen storeage usb flash drive or hard drive CDr/DVDr what ever you have.
email isnt quite so easy. microsoft ditched outlook express for vista and wnt to another email client and its crap, it says it allows the imort of outlook express email but the 7 times I have tried, even tried a few methonds of backing up the mail files it still won't import them. personally I would format and install XP on your new machine but you will only find out how bad vista really is when you try to use it.0 -
Memory stick or CD or DVD depending what you want to move acrossDon't listen to the bad things about Vista its the best
Just because it's free don't mean it's good
Ditch Norton Now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :wall:
Just Because you read it some where don't mean it's right0 -

I bet you bought a silver car didnt you? and bought it becasue it was silver. performance and funcionality dont count in your world I guess as long as it looks nice. married a blonde with good legs and a huge rack? :rotfl:
I remember the old we will make 1 operating systemt hat is sutable for business and home use, XP moved that way with 2 versions now we have 4 ok 5 variation of vista how is that getting a single OS it just makes things worse.0 -
1. Vista is one of the most stable systems Microsoft has every released and works fine.
2. The so called pester messages can be turned off.
3. You can delete files.
4. No i didn't buy a silver car or have a wife with blonde hair. I will be telling her what you said!!
5. XP won't be supported after 2009
6. I don't like know it all'sDon't listen to the bad things about Vista its the best

Vista doesnt work fine, like I said basic functions have problems. you shouldnt need to go and turn off the pester messages, Microsoft are assumeing that everyone is an idiot and don't have a clue what they are doing.
Ohh no microsoft are removing support for XP in 2009, its 18 months off and if there are still bugs in it by then well they probebly don't really matter.
I would like to know more about your experiance with vista, how many pc's have you installed with it on and what software have you used on it? so far my test PC has been reinstalled 16 times and the pc does have a full set of vista compatible drivers. None of the software my customers use work with vista even in compatability mode. Its becomeing apin having to go and install XP on the new systems they are buying before they can be used.0 -

appologies to the OP this thread has gone off at a tangent
Im not saying XP is the best thing since sliced bread, if you read my 2nd post on here I say windows 2000 is. NT4 was solid as a rock, a pain having to reinstall the service pack for minor hardware changes like a network card but you learned to live with it. 2000 was a huge improvemant over it and it maintaned the stability.
2 OSe's? Windows 3.0 and 3.1 were a GUI add on really to dos it was ok.
Windows 95 was a huge change and once people got over the change in look it wasnt too bad and the 3 upgrades that not many people ever knew about OSR2.5 was fine. Windows 98 original was poor but by OSR2 sorry SE they fixed loads of problems. Windows ME !!!!!! were they thinking total disaster but they rushed it through for the millenium.
Running 2 OS's side by side has been one for the home user, windows 3.0, 95/98/ME and XPhome. and one for the business side was windows 3.1, NT4, 2000 and XP Pro
With Vista the water have been clouded slightly vista home basic, home premium, vista business, vista ultimate and enterprise.
All the benefits Miscosoft are claimng with vista have been available in the past by installing software, automated backups, windows backup on NT4 can do that. Windows defender built in great but there are better programs available. CD writeing capabilities, movie making software all your media shown in media player library, simplified networking. Its all rubish just packing things out with pants software that isnt needed. Networking inst difficult that it needs a wizard to configure it, cd writing software just install nero media player 11 is freely available but there are alternatives. Microsoft are using these as selling points even the improved IE7 is listed as a selling point it isnt long back that microsoft were in the **** for shipping IE with windows. How long will it be before you get the security software companies kicking up a fuss? Even the stuff like connecting an xbox 360 and streaming videos, music or photos from the PC are available in windows 2000 by installing software. Its all been done before and you dont need to spend a small fortune on a new pc to run the software as microsoft want you to.0 -
at the end of the day vista is xp with a few skins on
i run xp on my pc but have skins on and to look and work on it you wouldn't know it's not vista. at the end of the day it's not a major upgrade like 98 to 2000 r xp was it's just micro$oft making money out of people0
