Talk Talk

Options
Just a quick note to anyone considering taking out broadband with Talk Talk through an unbundled exchange. We signed up last year and got an average of 1.5mbps - not great, but fine for email etc. Over the last few months the speed has dropped to 0.2mbps (which Talk Talk are telling us is an excellent download speed).

After several calls & emails thinking it was a technical issue we were surprised to be told... "Talk Talk are no longer investing in wholesale broadband" Asked what this meant, we were casually told that the speed issue would "probably not get any better" and to get better speed he suggested we MOVE HOME!

Anyway, unless you are in a LLU exchange in which Talk Talk has invested you would be better to avoid them.

Given the heavy surcharge made, I can't imagine why anyone would take a TT service unless available LLU.
Your ISP can only support the speed that the line is capable of, so retest the line from the BT test socket using ethernet. The issue may be your own internal wiring or wireless channel-not a TT problem.
TT have LLU'd a huge number of exchanges in the last few years, the few thousand left are unlikely to be cost-effective for any ISP to LLLU now or in the future, as the subscriber base is not big enough. TT's main focus now is pushing their TV services to existing phone and broadband customers.

Hi. I was getting 0.2, 0.3 so went to BT and got 7.2Mbs. I was told I would have to pay 92.71 for December and January. When I asked about compensation they said £30, then £40. I said I would see them in court so he said it would be given to a Debt collector. I have no way of getting compensation for 6 months rubbish service. Any advice?

They will pass it to a debt collector but that isnt really a problem. The problem will be that they will trash your credit file. You wont see them in court (unless you start the action) as they never seem to go that far. The debt collectors that they pass it to are just collection agencies. ALL they can do is write nasty letters or turn up on your doorstep. You can just tell them to go away and ignore them. They cant take your property or do anything really. Only a court appointed bailiff with a writ can do that. I have never heard of one of these cases actually being taken to court. Probably because the isps know they are on dodgy ground with some of the T&C in the contracts.

The wiring in our house is perfect. The speed is a TalkTalk issue and after several hours on the phone they even admitted so. In terms of Wholesale Broadband, I have been led to believe by Openreach, TalkTalk buy bandwidth and with them saying they are not investing in wholesale they are really saying that they are not buying any more bandwidth. If this is the case, the more people on TalkTalk using wholesale, the unbelievably worse speeds will be.

I think everybody who understands LLU knows that certain exchanges are not viable (ours is because of the size of the building). This, however, should not allow TalkTalk, or any other supliers, sell wholesale broadband as an equivalent product when in real terms is 85 times slower.

And how exactly have you established that? Have you tested from the BT test socket using ethernet, because no other method is valid?
It's nothing to do with TT's LLU investment. If you are on a TT non-LLU service then it s a resold BT Wholesale product, and the contention ratio may be an issue. However, the speed degradation you report would seem to clearly indicate a line, equipment or exchange fault. I suggest you report it to your line rental provider, if that is not TT, or as a line fault (not a broadband fault) to TT if they are.
Any noise or cracklng on the line? Done a quiet line test (dial 17070, option 2)?
As I said, I cannot imagine why anyone would take on a TT non-LLU product, since probably 99%+ of their customers are LLU. If you don't want or can't have an LU service, then Plusnet is the obvious choice of provider.
