  • I have been trying hard. Last night the kids and I had sausages from the freezer and the other half had one of the frozen chicken and stuffing pie. I also made bubble and squeak from the left over veg and it was much better than last time! For lunch today I used up the potatoes that are looking a bit iffy to make leak and potato soup.

    That's really good going.

I got home to found the tomatoes at the bottom of my fridge looking a bit sorry for themselves so I added them to tonight's tea (vegetable curry). I found a potato at the back of the cupboard and had that with my curry instead of the rice I had planned.

  • I had a cold cooked chicken left over from Sunday lunch.I had my oldest friend and her DD to lunch on sunday, so we had some chicken with salad.Monday nights dinner was chicken salad for me ,so thats four meals, and the left over bits I stripped the chicken of all edible bits then put the carcus into some water with some chopped onion and an old bendy diced up carrot and made a big jug of stock for soup. The chopped up stripped chicken I turned into four ddecent sized portions of chicken curry, with the addition of left over diced red pepper, some clapped out veg that was lurking at the bottom of the fridge, two starting to sprout spud(these I zapped until almost soft in the microwave then diced up and chucked into the curry pot,a handful of lentils, some diced up stalks of mushrooms from the freezer (I always dice and freeze them for soups stews or curries, along with sliced up brocolli stalks ,adds a bit of green colour to a curry and another veg :):):))) a small carton of passata from Sainsbobs that I had in the fridge (I think this cost 35p at the time )a decent shake of curry powder abd a dollop of lazy garlic, half a cup of water and let it simmer for 20 mintutes strirring occasionally.
Result was a very nice curry that will do at least four more meals. So my Aldeeee clucker from last week had made in total 8 meals costing around 50p a meal.plus the cooking costs.I'm happy with it and its put another four meals into my freezer :):):)I love currying things as its such a great way to streeetch even the smallest stuff to make a few meals with a few additions from the store cupboard.when reheated and poured on top of a plate of rice I shall enjoy my inexpensive chicken curry far more than an expensive take-away one :):):)
The chicken stock I shall use to make parsnip and apple soup with as I have some bendy parsnips and a few bruised apples that need using up.This should make me at least a litre and a half of nice soup to have for lunches with crackers and cheese, virtually free soup :):):) Nothing ever gets thrown in my house if I can help it :):):)
  • I had a frittata for my tea this evening to use up eggs, mushrooms, feta and sweet potatoes which were languishing at the bottom of my fridge.

I could do with some suggestions as to how to use up nuts. I have several open packets of nuts which I have used for baking etc. Each packet in itself is not enough to use for a cake etc but I wonder about pooling some of them together??

  • @Superrhinos
I have just used up a selection of almost out of date nuts and dried fruit by making rock buns - just threw everything in together. They were fab.

    Hi jackie,

I am just a bit concerned that you are suggesting it's OK to reheat food twice. I have always been told otherwise, over at least 50 years1

Same here but then I only cook exactly what I am going to eat. Today found the first thing that I have had to throw away in ages. Some bread that I forgot about in my bread bin. If I had known it was there I would have eaten it a couple of days ago.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.
